Šípkov: Hiking, Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Šípkov
Šípkov offers several reasons to visit for those interested in hiking, scenery and local history. The Slatinský kras nature trail leads to a crossroads above the village; Hrádok is also located above Šípkov. Other highlights include traditional folk architecture, a bell tower with an old Baroque bell and memorials.
Nature Trail and Landscape
The Slatinský kras nature trail runs from Krásna Ves via Bukovinská skala, Veľké lúky, Lažtek and Lupenice to a crossroads above Šípkov, and continues to Slatina nad Bebravou. It passes through karst terrain with no surface water or drinking water, so plan your water supply before setting out. Trail conditions may change; check them before you leave. Several spots offer views of the Strážovské vrchy mountains and the Upper Nitra Basin.
Nature in a Wider Context
The Strážovské vrchy Natura 2000 site also includes the cadastral area of Šípkov. Forest and rocky habitats predominate in the area. It is important for the nesting of birds of prey and owls, including the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and boreal owl (Aegolius funereus). The area’s natural significance extends from the views along the nature trail to the protected site that includes Šípkov.
Hrádok above Šípkov
Hrádok above Šípkov is a ruined castle dating from the 13th to 14th centuries. It is one of the fortifications built on the summits of small hills. A stone tower with a footprint of 6 × 6 metres dominated the site. This measurement refers to the tower, not the castle as a whole. From Šípkov, Hrádok can be reached on foot via a forest path in about 5 to 10 minutes; it is an easy walk. Conditions may vary by season, so check the state of the path before your visit.
Architectural Heritage and Bell
Traditional folk architecture has been preserved in Šípkov, including typical rural settlement forms known as “houses with height.” The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a landmark in the centre of Šípkov, north of the municipal office. The bell tower in Šípkov houses an old Baroque bell made by Ján Ernest Christelly, a bell founder from Trnava. The local architectural heritage ranges from rural settlement forms to church architecture and bell founding.
Memorials in and around Šípkov
A memorial near the Lupenica sheepfold commemorates 22 people who were executed in November 1944. Two memorials to the victims of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) stand in Šípkov: one to the left of the municipal office, the other on the main road opposite house No. 181. Hrádok, dating from the 13th to 14th centuries, and the commemoration of the November 1944 executions illustrate the span of local history.
