Šišov: Church, Manor House and Historic Park
Accommodation in Šišov
The history of Šišov can be seen in the fortified hillfort above the village, the present-day Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, and the Neoclassical manor house with its historic park. These sites connect archaeological, ecclesiastical and architectural history, but they tell of different periods. When choosing a destination, you can focus on the hillfort and church or on the manor house and park. A cycling route through Šišov adds a cycling dimension to these cultural and historical themes.
Church and Hillfort: Several Periods
The Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross stands at the centre of a fortified hillfort above Šišov. The present-day church was completed in 1781, and its tower was added in 1821. The two dates mark different stages of construction: the tower was added four decades after the church was completed.
The main altar dates from the period when the church was built. Its columned architecture and wooden angel figures are specific details of its decoration. Thus, alongside the building’s history, the design of the altar also comes into focus.
The hillfort points to a much earlier period than the present-day church. Pottery fragments found at the fortified site attest to Slavic settlement from the 8th to the 10th century. The archaeological dating places the site within early settlement history, while the completion of the present-day church in the 18th century marks a later period.
Manor House and Historic Park
The Leidenfrost Manor House in Šišov is a two-storey Neoclassical building on older foundations. In the municipal development programme for 2025–2034, the manor house and its associated park are listed as national cultural monuments under ÚZPF number 2188. The building thus combines a Neoclassical form with an older structural foundation.
The historic park lies east of the manor house and on both banks of the Livina stream. Rows of coniferous trees were planted along the paths, chiefly spruces, firs and larches. The park’s location and planting give it a focus of its own alongside the manor house’s architecture: the layout of the paths and the tree-lined avenues shape the landscape described here.
The open meadows in the park are currently used for sports and physical education activities. This current use is a distinct aspect of the grounds, alongside their historic character and avenues.
Planning Your Trip
A municipal description from 2014 mentions two access routes to the manor house: from the north via a local road and from the south via an access road through a chestnut avenue. If you are planning to visit the interior, check access in advance.
The cycling route through Šišov offers another way to plan your trip, in addition to the historical sites. To decide whether Šišov fits your travel plans, you can weigh these different points of interest: the fortified hillfort and church, the manor house and its park, or the cycling route.
