Monuments and Architectural History
The monument to Ľudovít Štúr was created in 1936 by academic sculptor Jozef Pospíšil. It is considered the first and largest monument to Štúr in Slovakia. The Janko Jesenský Memorial House offers a different biographical connection: it commemorates the house at 19/569 Jesenského Street, where Jesenský lived and worked from 1905 to 1914. A plaque with a bronze bust by academic sculptor M. Tomášek is located at the memorial house.
Several religious buildings illustrate different periods and architectural styles. The former synagogue was built in 1862 in the historicist style on Jesenského Street. Today, it is used as an Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession; check its current status before visiting. The Church of St. Nicholas contains a brick pulpit dating from the Renaissance period, which is dated to the late 17th century. The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1803 in the Classicist style. A valuable wooden nativity scene, created by carver B. Reka of Kutná Hora, was acquired for this church in 1929.
The memorial sites offer different points of interest: the Štúr Monument and Jesenský Memorial House focus on notable figures and remembrance, while the churches offer insights into architectural and decorative history. Their dates range from the pulpit, dated to the late 17th century, through the former synagogue of 1862, to the Classicist church built in 1803.
