History and Notable Figures in Dolné Držkovce
Dolné Držkovce has been mentioned as the settlement of Filips since 1232. The village was a curial estate of the Držkovský noble family, whose name also appears in the forms Drskóczy and Draskóczi. Viticulture is documented for the 16th and 17th centuries; in 1673, there were potter and furrier families here. These details connect the settlement’s history with winegrowing and specialized crafts. They offer different points of interest if, during a stay, you are interested in its long history or its former economic life.
The brothers Ľudovít and Mikuláš Dohnány are also part of the local cultural history. They were born in the old manor complex of Dolné Držkovce and were associates of Ľudovít Štúr. A commemorative plaque on the former notary’s office pays tribute to the brothers and to Karol Kmeťko. Kmeťko was born in Dolné Držkovce in 1875 and later became Archbishop of Nitra. Ján Morvay was also born there and was a supporter of the Bernolák movement; in 1831, he translated and published a Slovak guide to combating cholera. These biographies span Slovak cultural and linguistic history as well as a specific text about cholera.
Church Architecture in Dolné and Horné Držkovce
The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Dolné Držkovce was built in 1931. It is a single-nave religious building in the Historicist style: the presbytery has a straight-ended apse, and the tower is positioned at a corner of the building. These architectural features offer concrete points of reference if you are interested in exploring its form and style. An entry in a monument register, updated in 2022, describes the church as being in good condition and notes that it continues to be used for religious purposes. Check visiting arrangements before your visit. The chapel in Horné Držkovce was commissioned by the Krejči noble family in 1900 in gratitude for their daughter’s recovery. It was extended and extensively renovated in 2007.
Landscape and Cycling
The municipality of Veľké Držkovce lies in the western part of the Bánovce spur of the Nitra Loess Hills and along the middle reaches of the Inovec stream. It can therefore be located in relation to both a larger landscape unit and a watercourse. A municipal development program lists the Okolo Považského Inovca cycling route, with the section between Čuklasovce and Zlatníky, as passing through Dolné Držkovce. Another described route runs from Bánovce nad Bebravou to Považský Inovec. It follows paved roads as well as field and forest tracks and is suitable for MTB and trekking bikes. Before setting out, check the signage, surfaces and current trail conditions.
Držkovská držka and Regional Cuisine
Municipal planning materials list Držkovská držka as an annual event organized by the HODOČU civic association since 2012. Registered teams from across Slovakia compete to prepare the best tripe soup. Dates and access may vary by edition, so check the information for the event you wish to attend before making plans.
