Discover Malé Hoste: Culture and History
Accommodation in Malé Hoste
Malé Hoste can be described through a variety of themes: the old Slavic castle rampart at Brišťo, religious buildings, the historic wheelwright’s workshop and the Livina stream. There is also a named circular route through the village. For planning your trip, these offer different perspectives: archaeological and architectural history on the one hand, and a specific cycling tour on the other. This lets you consider cultural history and activity as separate focal points.
Brišťo: Castle Rampart and Early Finds
Archaeological finds from the Great Moravian period of the 9th to 10th centuries AD were discovered at the old Slavic castle rampart at Brišťo. The rampart itself also dates from the 9th to 10th centuries. The two date ranges overlap, but refer to different things: one to the finds, the other to the structure. The foundations of the rampart are hidden beneath grass. The foundations of a Romanesque church are also located on the rampart. The finds and the dating of the structure refer to the same pair of centuries, while the church foundations provide a separate architectural point of reference.
Church Architecture and Historic Fittings
The “St Martin's Church” is a Baroque church built in 1787. It houses an organ with a five-part façade structure, made by master craftsman Wagner in the mid-19th century. A Renaissance bell dating from 1651 is located in the tower. The three dates are easy to distinguish: the bell is older than the church building, while the organ dates from a later period. At the same time, the five-part façade structure adds a detail to the description of the organ beyond its date; it is a distinct architectural feature of the church.
Chapel and Wooden Cross
Another religious landmark is the wayside chapel of St Vendelin. It was built around the 18th or 19th century; its surviving remains were reconstructed in 2004–2005. The construction date is therefore an approximate range, while the reconstruction is dated to two specific years. In Pusté, an undated wooden cross stands in a field above the cemetery. The two religious sites also differ in their dating: for the chapel, an approximate construction period and the years of reconstruction are given, while the wooden cross is undated.
Historic Work and Local Orientation
The village’s history includes the former world of work as well as its buildings. Historically, wheelwrighting was one of the most important occupations among the population of Malé Hoste. The history of wheelwrighting thus complements the architectural and religious history with a different subject: an occupation that was once among the most important for the local population.
The geography can also be briefly described: the Livina stream flows through Malé Hoste and onward to Pochabany. A separate activity option is the “Duchonka – Zlatníky – Solčianky – Topoľčany” circular route, which passes through Malé Hoste. It is particularly suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. The stream and the circular route offer different points of reference: one describes the course of the waterway, while the other is a cycling route with a specifically stated suitability.
