Explore Uhrovec through its culture and nature. Local cultural highlights include the birthplace of Ľudovít Štúr and Alexander Dubček, the Uhrovec Museum and the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit. Jankov vŕšok adds another focal point with its nature reserve and SNP monument.

Museum and buildings in Uhrovec

The birthplace of Ľudovít Štúr and Alexander Dubček is in Uhrovec, the birthplace of both figures. In 1965, the house was declared a national cultural monument. This links the name of the village to both historical birthplaces and a specific monument.

The Uhrovec Museum is an ethnographic museum that has been open since 2004. Its collection includes a Gothic bell from 1511 and a Renaissance bell from 1653. The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Uhrovec is Neoclassical and was built in 1817. The birthplace, museum and church therefore offer distinct highlights: a designated cultural monument, an ethnographic collection and church architecture.

Jankov vŕšok: nature reserve and memorial site

Jankov vŕšok lies within the cadastral area of Uhrovec and has been a nature reserve since 1993. Its landscape is characterized by calcareous stands of cornelian cherry and oak forests, as well as a large occurrence of orchids. These include the lady orchid and the common spotted orchid. These plant examples give the nature theme a specific focus without implying that the two species make up all of the reserve’s vegetation.

The SNP monument also stands on Jankov vŕšok. It comprises a memorial mound complex with a pylon and mausoleum. The monument adds a historical memorial site to the area’s natural appeal. According to tourism information updated in 2023, SNP commemorations are held there every year at the end of August. If you plan to travel for this occasion, check the specific event dates in advance.

The Striebornica recreation area includes a nature trail about water and wetland ecosystems. Its focus differs from the orchid and forest landscape of Jankov vŕšok: here, aquatic habitats and wetlands take center stage.

Castle, chateau and visitor planning

Nearby Uhrovec Castle is in the neighboring village of Uhrovské Podhradie, not in the center of Uhrovec. From Uhrovské Podhradie, it can be reached via a green-marked trail in about 30 minutes. The surviving parts of the castle include a late Romanesque chapel and towers. The approximate walking time refers to the route from Uhrovské Podhradie and is a separate planning detail for this destination.

Uhrovský kaštieľ is distinct from Uhrovec Castle. The Zaiovcov family gradually transformed the chateau into a fortified family residence. The side wing housed the Zay Library, which contained more than 20,000 volumes. These details give the chateau its own architectural and collection history, while the nearby castle is characterized, among other things, by its late Romanesque chapel and towers.

On August 17, 2023, restoration work at Uhrovský kaštieľ was on hold because of a lack of funds. Check the current status before planning a visit to the building’s interior. This keeps the historical information in its proper time context and avoids implying that the interior is currently open to visitors.

According to information updated on April 1, 2025, visits to the Uhrovec Museum require advance booking by phone. The listed hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call ahead to make a booking and confirm your visiting time.
