In Topoľčany District, varied landscapes meet archaeological sites, castles and museums. Považský Inovec frames the district to the west and Tribeč to the east. This lets you include both nature and culture in your travel plans: from the landscape and the Duchonka recreational area to historical collections and hiking destinations.

Landscape and Duchonka

The Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Ponitrie) extends into the eastern part of Topoľčany District and provides a habitat for rare, protected plant and animal species. In the part of Tribeč within the district, oak-hornbeam and oak forests are characteristic; beech forests are also found at higher elevations.

Duchonka offers a different perspective on the landscape: The recreational area is located in the cadastral area of Prašice, on the eastern edge of Považský Inovec, in and around the Duchonka Reservoir. The water can be used for swimming, boating, fishing and other sporting activities. All activities on the water are undertaken at your own risk. Duchonka is therefore a place for a variety of water-based leisure activities; which ones suit your stay depends on your own plans.

Open-air archaeology

At Hradisko Valy, an open-air archaeological exhibition features reconstructed Slavic dwellings, a defensive rampart, a clay oven, a blacksmith’s workshop and a storage pit. The individual reconstructions illustrate different aspects of the way of life presented. One of the most distinctive structures is the largest reconstruction of a Slavic gate in Central Europe. The site is about five kilometres from Bojná and is accessible year-round. Check local conditions before your visit.

Oponice: hiking trails and Apponyi heritage

A hiking trail leads from Oponice to Oponický hrad; the walk takes about 30 minutes. For a longer hike, the moderately difficult Oponice–Horné Lefantovce route, which follows marked trails, is a useful option. It follows a green hiking trail past Apponyi Castle, surrounded by an English-style park, and then climbs to Oponický hrad. You can check local trail conditions before setting out. From Oponický hrad, panoramic views extend across the Zobor Valley to Bánovecko.

The Apponyi Museum in Oponice also focuses on the family’s history: It includes more than 2,500 exhibits related to the Apponyi family. Part of the Apponyi family library, founded in 1774, belongs to the museum. Another exhibition features artefacts from Allied aircraft that crashed in the Tribeč Mountains at the end of the Second World War. The Church of St. Peter and Paul houses an organ built in 1869, with 620 pipes. The Apponyi crypt lies beneath the church and has been open to the public since 1993. Check the current access rules before visiting.

Castles and museum visits

Topoľčiansky hrad, a royal castle dating from the 13th century, stands above the village of Podhradie. You can drive to a point below the castle; from there, it is about a five-minute walk. From Podhradie, the walking route follows blue- and green-marked trails and takes about 15 minutes. A red cycle route also leads to the castle from Topoľčany. The approximate walking times and different access routes provide practical guidance for planning; checking conditions on site in advance may be helpful.

For a museum visit in Topoľčany, the Tribeč Museum offers another cultural highlight. Its collection includes more than 90,200 objects; the museum also regularly hosts exhibitions and workshops. Together with the archaeological exhibition at Hradisko Valy and the Apponyi collections in Oponice, it offers insight into different historical topics in the district.
