Ardanovce is situated in a stream valley on the edge of the Nitrianska pahorkatina, below the Považský Inovec Mountains. Two main themes are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: landscapes and trails, and archaeological and architectural history. This can help you decide whether you would prefer to connect your stay with nature or with historical remains.

Landscape and Nature Trail

The surrounding forests are suitable for recreation, walks, and relaxation; mushroom picking is also one of their uses. The forests and nature trail offer different experiences: the forests provide several forms of recreation, while the Náučný chodník Považský Inovec is a self-guided hiking route with a branching course.

The nature trail runs through the cadastral area of Ardanovce. It has ten branches and can be hiked in either direction throughout the year. Including the branches to the municipalities, it is approximately 60 km long. This length refers to the nature trail and all its branches as a whole; it helps distinguish the overall scale of the route from its specific connection to the cadastral area of Ardanovce.

Archaeological Traces and Architectural History

A prehistoric settlement with pottery fragments has been documented on the left terrace of a stream between Ardanovce and Šalgovce. Finds also include stone tools and traces of buildings. The settlement dates from the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods, two successive prehistoric periods. The dating and types of finds offer different ways of interpreting the site: the periods provide a chronological framework, while the pottery, stone tools, and traces of buildings make its actual remains tangible.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Michael is an important late Gothic architectural monument dating from 1503. The church preserves a stone holy water font from the 15th century, decorated with a mascaron. A mascaron is a mask-like decorative motif; here, it forms part of a specific detail of the church’s furnishings. The font therefore dates from an earlier century than the building, which is dated to 1503.

The rectory stands next to the church. It was built in 1787 and remodeled in the Neoclassical style in 1804. The two years mark different building phases: 1787 for its construction and 1804 for its later remodeling. The Neoclassical style relates to this later alteration of the rectory. The prehistoric settlement is brought to life by its material traces; the construction dates of the church and rectory place their architecture in historical context, while the holy water font adds a furnishing detail to the building’s history.
