Súlovce between the hilly landscape and Tribeč
Accommodation in Súlovce
Súlovce can be explored as a travel destination through its landscape, cycling connections and local history. These perspectives answer different questions: its geographical setting shows its position at the transition between several landscape regions, while route 5109 and local historical traces offer concrete starting points for planning a trip.
Landscape between Ponitrie and Tribeč
The Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area also includes the municipality of Súlovce. The village lies at the transition between the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina and the northwestern foothills of the Tribeč Mountains. The municipal area includes open hilly landscapes, alluvial fans and areas covered with oak-hornbeam forests. The Tribeč Mountains rise above Súlovce; their highest peak is Veľký Tribeč.
These geographical terms describe different levels: Ponitrie refers to the protected-area framework, the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina and the Tribeč foothills place Súlovce in a transition zone, and the hills, alluvial fans and forested areas describe features of the municipality. Both its connection to the mountains and its open and wooded areas are therefore important to understanding the landscape.
Cycling connections and a historic winter ascent
Local cycling route 5109 runs from Oponice to Babova dolina and passes through Súlovce. In Babova dolina, it intersects the Tribečská hrebeňovka cycling route (049). For planning your rides, it is important to distinguish these places: Súlovce lies along route 5109, while the named intersection with route 049 is in Babova dolina. This makes it possible to distinguish the route through the village from the described connection between the two cycling routes.
Another activity-related connection is the 2019 KST-Žochár winter ascent. Its 21 km route ran from Súlovce via Cincilak, Veľký Tribeč, the Vlčica mountain hut, Pozerák and Kovarský sklad to Solčany. The fixed route length and precise sequence of places make this historic winter ascent a distinct reference for planning a tour. The information differs by activity and timeframe: route 5109 is a cycling route through Súlovce, while the 21 km route was part of a winter ascent in 2019.
Local history and cultural traces
Súlovce was first mentioned in writing in 1244. Historical forms of the name include Dubnica (Dubnicza), Súloc (Zúlocz) and Szúlocz. These variants add older spellings to the history of the village and show that Súlovce is also recorded under other historical names.
Since the second half of the 19th century, the settlement of Podlužany has been part of the municipality of Súlovce. A mill was built there and still stands today. The history of Podlužany thus links its territorial affiliation with a surviving building.
Betlehem, a part of Súlovce, was once a sheep farm. The church’s original bells in Súlovce also tell of a connection to Betlehem: they were melted down and replaced with bells from Betlehem. The seals of the village judge are another local historical reference. Together, these different traces offer insight into the village’s history, from former uses to recorded names and changes to the church.
