Nemečky: Archaeological Finds, Cultural Monuments and Trails
Accommodation in Nemečky
Nemečky lies below the eastern slopes and foothills of the Považský Inovec, in a relatively deep valley of the Chocina stream, which runs on both sides of the village. Wooded ridges of the side foothills frame the village. The landscape, cultural monuments and trails offer different focal points for a stay in Nemečky.
Early History and Archaeological Sites
A Neolithic vessel dating from 4000 to 2000 BC was found in the Luknišová area near Nemečky. Remains of a settlement dating to around the 3rd millennium BC, including pottery sherds from the Potiská culture, were discovered within the village. Sherds from the Lány site near Luknišová were attributed to the so-called Ludanice Group and date to the Early Eneolithic.
The finds differ both in their dating and in their archaeological context: the vessel, settlement remains and Lány sherds represent different chapters of prehistory. The vessel is assigned to a broad period, the settlement to approximately the 3rd millennium BC; the pottery from Lány is associated with the Early Eneolithic and the Ludanice Group.
Religious Cultural Monuments and Pilgrimage History
Religious cultural monuments in Nemečky include the village bell tower, with a bell dating from 1864, and a stone statue of the Virgin Mary and Child dating from 1714. The village is also home to the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows and a wooden cross that has always stood there. The bell and statue have specific dates, while the chapel and cross add other, differently described examples to the picture of the religious heritage.
Near Nemečky, the devotional image known as Obrázok stands at a forest-path junction. In the 17th and 18th centuries, many believers stopped there on their way to pilgrimage sites in the Považie region. Pilgrims no longer pass through the area. This sets the history of Obrázok apart from the monuments in the village: here, the focus is on a former pilgrimage tradition.
At the Reservoir: Fishing, Boating and a Winter Tradition
Nemečky Reservoir is used for fishing and attracts many anglers every year. The area is also suitable for boating. Since 2002, the Ľadové medvede have regularly gathered at the reservoir to ceremonially open the winter swimmers’ bathing season. If you are planning a visit specifically for this occasion, check in advance whether a date has been scheduled.
The reservoir is about a 15-minute walk from the village along a paved road. This describes the walk from Nemečky to the reservoir; the other routes in the area have their own courses and distances.
Nature Trail, Cycle Route and Wildlife
The Považský Inovec nature trail passes through Nemečky. It is a self-guided, text- and graphic-based linear route that is open all year round. Including its branches through the municipalities, it is about 60 km long. The blue Duchonka cycle route 2101 runs around Nemečky Reservoir. The routes can be distinguished by their courses: the nature trail passes through the village, while the cycle route goes around the reservoir.
The edges of the forests are also part of Nemečky’s natural landscape. Hares, wild rabbits, ground squirrels, least weasels and red foxes live there; their presence may vary seasonally. Alongside the cultural monuments and prehistoric archaeological contexts, the landscape and wildlife are also distinct topics to consider when planning a trip.
