Topoľčany combines distinctive architectural history with a museum that looks beyond the city’s own past, as well as a range of cultural venues. When planning a hotel stay, it is worth taking a thematic approach: architecture and history sit alongside collections, contemporary culture and a carefully described cycling stage. The destinations differ in both subject matter and the kind of visit they offer.

Historic squares and architecture

Námestie M. R. Štefánika is a historic square in Topoľčany. At the centre of this distinctive quadrangular square stands the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The late Baroque building dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. One side of the square is adorned by Topoľčany’s Secessionist town hall.

Stummerova ulica, with the grounds of the old hospital, also shows how the urban landscape can draw attention: the area was designated a conservation area in 2020. Its historic layout and architectural and decorative-art details have largely been preserved. A visit to Meštianska vila, by contrast, is limited to the exterior: the Secessionist villa can be viewed from outside, but its interiors are not open to the public.

Museum and city history

The Tribečské múzeum v Topoľčanoch is housed in a former Imperial-Royal district court building dating from the late 19th century. In 2014, the building was declared a national cultural monument. The building’s history and its present-day use as a museum thus come together in one place.

The museum focuses on the history of hop growing, malting and brewing in Slovakia. It also presents more than 90,200 items from the natural and social sciences in its collections to the public. Its specialist focus and wide-ranging collection offer different ways to explore: you can delve into a specific topic in agriculture and brewing, or broaden your perspective across a range of fields.

Another clearly defined topic is covered by the permanent exhibition “Z dejín židovskej komunity v Topoľčanoch” at the Jewish cemetery. It has been open since 28 October 2010 and comprises 15 thematic sections. It focuses on a specific part of the history of the Jewish community in Topoľčany.

Cultural venues and events

Alongside the museum, the Galéria mesta Topoľčany offers a different cultural programme. The gallery is next to the town hall and organises exhibitions, concerts, vernissages and lectures. Nástupište 1-12, meanwhile, is a 300-metre-long, fully functional multimedia space for contemporary culture in the underpass beneath the bus station. The two venues represent different forms of cultural life: a gallery programme and a space for contemporary culture.

Cycling and excursions nearby

The second stage of the main cycling route from Topoľčany is 6.818 kilometres long, runs along the Nitra flood barrier and is part of the Ponitrianska cyklomagistrála. It is separated from motor traffic along its entire length, except for 410.6 metres on an access road marked with a pictogram. If you plan to ride this stage, remember to take the marked section into account.

Nearby, Topoľčiansky hrad castle is located in Podhradie. It offers views over Ponitrie and includes reconstructed rooms in the upper castle with an amphitheatre. The grounds of a reservoir nearby are also a place to go fishing, boating and walking in nature. The tourist information office in Topoľčany finds and provides transport connections to nearby destinations and sells tourist maps and brochures.

For a seasonal activity, consider Krytá plaváreň Topoľčany: its season runs from September to June. Tickets are sold at the ticket office during public opening hours. Check the current opening hours before your visit. This makes it possible to weigh up different priorities for your stay, from architecture and museum themes to cycling and excursions in the surrounding area.
