Žilina District offers cultural and natural attractions for a variety of travel interests, from medieval castles and historical collections to hiking trails and thermal waters. To plan your trip, it is worth listing the specific places and experiences you would like to visit.

Riverside landscapes, castles and architecture

Žilina District lies in the Žilina Basin. The city of Žilina is located in the Váh Valley, in the basin landscape where the Váh, Kysuca and Rajčianka rivers meet. Budatín Castle is also located at the confluence of two rivers, the Váh and the Kysuca. The “History of Žilina” exhibition is on the castle’s third floor.

In the centre of Žilina, Mariánske námestie, with its characteristic burgher houses, forms the heart of a heritage conservation area. Another aspect of the city’s history is presented by Dom umenia Fatra: the Art Nouveau building was formerly known as Grand Bio Univerzum. The first Slovak film, “Jánošík,” premiered there in 1921. Rosenfeld Palace is a significant Art Nouveau monument from the early 20th century and is reminiscent of Vienna’s Belvedere Palace. Experts consider the Neological Synagogue a unique architectural monument.

The Church of St Stephen the King in Dolné Rudiny is another prominent historic building: it is considered Žilina’s oldest monument. Its oldest frescoes are almost 800 years old. In Čičmany, the Považské Museum manages two wooden houses, Radenov dom and Dom č. 42. The exhibition on folk architecture at Radenov dom covers stages of life, customs, work and occupations, food, Čičmany’s architecture, and clothing and textiles. Wirecraft—both a craft and an art—was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2019.

Strečno Castle is open to the public as a preserved medieval ruin and has been a national cultural monument since 1970. Lietava Castle has been abandoned since the mid-18th century and deteriorated over 250 years into a structurally hazardous condition. Check current visitor safety information before visiting.

Hiking trails and protected landscapes

Malá Fatra National Park is crisscrossed by numerous marked hiking trails. Options range from easy walks and ridge hikes to more demanding routes with chains and ladders. Jánošíkove diery, often called Diery for short, is a system of gorges and canyons in Krivánska Malá Fatra, within the Rozsutec National Nature Reserve.

The educational trail through Dolné diery and Nové diery features waterfalls, ladders and wooden footbridges and is also suitable for families with children. It starts in the Biely Potok district; parking is available in front of Hotel Diery. As access and parking conditions may change, check them locally. For a broader view of the region, the Rajecká Valley encompasses several smaller protected areas and biocentres with rare vegetation.

Thermal waters and transport history

Rajecká thermal water is classified as natural healing water with a medium mineral content and contains bicarbonate, calcium and magnesium. Aphrodite Spa uses it for drinking cures, a practice with a history there dating back to the 19th century. If drinking cures are important to your plans, check their current availability separately.

The Aphrodite water world has indoor and outdoor pools using natural healing thermal water containing calcium and magnesium ions. Check the current admission conditions before visiting. The Transport Museum in Rajecké Teplice offers another way to explore regional history: every year, it takes part in preparing the Rajecká Anča event with a historic motor train and other transport technology. If you plan to attend, check the dates.

Žilina is an important point of reference for getting around: the city is a major railway and motorway hub. Žilina–Dolný Hričov International Airport serves the northwestern region of Slovakia. When looking for a hotel, it helps to decide on your priorities first: travellers mainly interested in historic architecture and collections will plan differently from those focused on hiking or thermal waters. Choose your location based on the specific places you want to visit.
