Čičmany can be explored through several specific interests: painted wooden houses, two museum exhibitions, and sporting activities in different seasons. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural and everyday history, a mountain biking trail, and seasonal winter sports. This gives you a thematic overview of the village and its various points of interest for a stay.

Wooden Houses, Paintwork, and Embroidery

The ornamental paintwork on Čičmany’s wooden houses originated for a practical purpose: a coat of lime protected the wood. The visible decoration is therefore linked to the functional protection of the building material. The Čičmany heritage conservation reserve comprises 136 houses.

Embroidery from Čičmany is a craft in its own right. It was originally made from linen and uses geometrically stylized Renaissance motifs such as stars and squares, as well as animal motifs. This means that, alongside the houses, the materials and patterns of the textiles are also among the village’s cultural themes.

A Glimpse into Everyday Life and Homes

Radenov dom is the last surviving two-storey house in Čičmany. The exhibition there covers every stage of life and local customs, work activities and occupations, livelihoods and Čičmany’s architecture, as well as clothing and textiles. Its themes therefore range from ways of living and working to architectural culture and clothing.

In House No. 42, a diorama shows the large-family living arrangement typical of Čičmany until the beginning of the 20th century. The house itself was built in 1913 as a residence for four families who shared an oven and a table. The dates refer to different things: the form of living depicted in the diorama and the year the house was built. If you would like to visit the exhibitions, check access before your trip.

Mountain Biking Trail and Strážov

A mountain biking trail runs from Čičmany via Javorinka to the Sedlo Javorinky saddle and over to the other side of the range as far as Čičermanské sedlo. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

At the summit of Strážov, the cadastral territories of Čičmany, Zliechov, and Pružina meet. Strážov National Nature Reserve is located in the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area.

Winter Sports During the Ski Season

Čičmany’s winter sports facilities for skiers and snowboarders include six ski lifts, two marked cross-country ski trails, and five downhill runs of varying difficulty. Before your trip, check which lifts, trails, and runs are operating seasonally. The trails and runs are for different types of winter sports; the difficulty ratings refer to the downhill runs.

During the ski season, a ski service, ski equipment rental, storage, and a ski school are also available. Since these services are described as seasonal, check their current availability before your trip. The combination of exhibitions, architectural culture, cycling, and winter sports offers a range of thematic options for planning your stay.
