Stráža: Cycling, the Varínka and culture
Accommodation in Stráža
Stráža lies on the eastern edge of the Žilina Basin, in the Varínka floodplain, and has a mountainous terrain. The territory of Stráža is part of the Malá Fatra Protected Landscape Area and lies within its third protection zone. The river, terrain and protected area give the local landscape its distinctive character. Marked cycling routes, cultural sites and travel by bus, car or train also offer practical guidance for planning your trip.
Cycling on marked routes
The green-marked Gbeľany–Lysica–Varín cycling route is 23.6 kilometres long. After a short climb up Strážovský Hill, it descends to Stráža, passes through the village and continues to Dolná Tižina. This makes the section through the village part of a longer, named route.
The Žilina Dam–Terchová Cycle Highway follows the Varínka through Varín to Terchová and crosses a system of 17 wooden bridges. This cycling route is easy and safe, and suitable for families with children. You can stop for ice cream in Stráža along the way. While the Gbeľany–Lysica–Varín route includes the climb up Strážovský Hill and continues through the village, the river and bridges are distinctive features of the Cycle Highway.
Another option is the green-marked route 5472 Horný Vadičov–Lysica–Stráža–Krasňany, which reaches Stráža. The routes mentioned differ in their course and described features, so you can use the section through the village, the route along the Varínka or route 5472 as a reference point when planning.
The Varínka and nature around Stráža
The Varínka flows through Stráža and is a trout-fishing water where fishing is possible. Nearby forests and the beautiful natural surroundings of Stráža are ideal for hiking.
The wider natural area of Malá Fatra also offers a regional perspective on the landscape: it has deciduous, coniferous and mixed forests that support a wide variety of bird species.
Culture and history
Every July, the municipality of Stráža holds the Gorazdove dni sports and cultural celebrations. For a trip focused on culture, this is an annual event to look out for. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the dates for the year you intend to travel.
The Božie muky Chapel stands on the hill above Stráža. Dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, it is a Neoclassical building dating from the late 18th century. Local history also has a specific date: Stráža was first mentioned in writing in 1439, in a deed of donation by King Albert. A variant of the folk costume worn in Terchová was also worn in Stráža.
