Rajecká Lesná: Culture, Pilgrimage and Winter Sports
Rajecká Lesná combines religious heritage around the basilica and Kalvária with the woodcarving art of Slovenský Betlehem and seasonal activities at the ski park. If you are looking for a hotel in Rajecká Lesná, you can plan your trip around your main interest: culture and pilgrimage, the exhibition, or winter sports. The specified feast days, the dimensions of the Betlehem and the winter activities on offer also provide concrete points of reference for planning a stay.
Basilica, Frescoes and Pilgrimage
The Basilica of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was consecrated on 27 May 1866. On 7 September 2002, the pilgrimage church was solemnly declared a Basilica minor. These two dates mark different stages in its history: its consecration and its later elevation to the status of a Basilica minor. Remains of Gothic frescoes from the early 14th century are preserved in the presbytery next to the basilica; they are now protected as a historic monument. Thus, religious history and a protected work of art come together here.
Kalvária, also called Frivald, was built in 1920–1921 with financial contributions from local people who lived and worked in America. A Lourdes chapel was built next to Kalvária, where a spring rises. Pilgrimages with a Way of the Cross are held at Kalvária on the feasts of the Most Holy Trinity and the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, on Good Friday, and on the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius. These specified dates distinguish the religious occasions throughout the year rather than grouping them into a single feast.
The so-called Fatima Saturdays take place from May to October, on the first Saturday of each month. For planning your schedule, this recurring date offers a different point of reference from the pilgrimages held on the specified feast days.
Slovenský Betlehem and Woodcarving
Slovenský Betlehem in Rajecká Lesná is 8.5 metres long, 2.5 metres wide and 3 metres high. In addition to the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem and the life of Christ, the exhibition also depicts the history of the Slovak people. Its content thus combines religious scenes with a historical theme. The dimensions also give a concrete sense of the work’s size: it is considerably longer than it is wide and reaches a height of three metres.
On the first floor of the Slovenský Betlehem building, a gallery features woodcarvings by prominent carvers from Rajec, including Brieštenský, Veselý and Bača. Those interested in woodcarving will find another arts-and-crafts subject alongside the Betlehem, focusing on the named carvers and their work.
Winter Activities, Geyser and Cycling Route
The Rajecká Lesná ski park has artificial snowmaking, a snowboard park, snow tubing, an ice rink and a children’s park; evening skiing is also available. There are suitable runs for beginners and intermediate skiers. The range of activities listed makes the ski park a concrete point of reference for a winter trip. As availability may vary seasonally, it is advisable to check in advance which activities will be available when you visit.
The artificial geyser shoots water about 10 metres into the air, creating a colourful rainbow; its appearance may vary seasonally. An asphalt road leads directly from Rajecká Lesná to the geyser. As local road conditions may change, it is a good idea to check the latest information before setting out. For a cycling trip, the route “Rajeckou dolinou na dvoch kolesách” is another point of reference: it passes through Rajecká Lesná. As route alignments may change, it is best to check the route before setting out.
