Bitarová lies in the western part of the Žilina Basin, in the valley of the Bitarovský potok. The landscape is almost entirely treeless and hilly, and is also marked by seasonal bird migration, traces of the past and a longer route through the municipality. This makes it possible to explore the area through a range of interests: its landscape, its history or as part of a tour that starts and ends in Žilina.

Rolling Hills and Bird Migration

The hilly landscape is shaped by marshy hollows and low ridges. Small areas of woodland lie in the southwest and northeast of the municipal area. So, alongside the hills, Bitarová’s landscape also includes wetter depressions and scattered patches of woodland. A bird migration route also passes through Bitarová in spring and autumn. These seasons give the nature theme a clear seasonal connection, without allowing individual sightings to be predicted in advance.

The “Za krásami Súľova” Tour

One specific way to include Bitarová on a longer route is the 27-kilometre “Za krásami Súľova” tour. It is rated as moderately difficult and runs from Žilina through Bitarová, Peklina, Rôsoviny pod Roháčom, Hričovské Podhradie, Ovčiarsko and Hradisko, before returning to Žilina. The distance and difficulty rating provide an initial basis for planning; check the trail surface and access conditions before setting out.

The route through Bitarová itself is also described: at the start of the section through the municipality, the route turns off the main road just beyond the town sign. At the intersection by the municipal office, it turns left again shortly before the chapel. These landmarks help distinguish the local section of the tour from the entire route. The tour passes through several named places, so it is not simply a short loop within Bitarová.

Historical Traces

Bitarová was first mentioned as a municipality in 1393 and historically belonged to the Lietava estate. A settlement dating back even further, to the Late Bronze Age, is associated with the Lusatian and Púchov cultures. The municipal area is also home to a Slovak burial ground with burial mounds from the period of the Great Moravian Empire. Together, these historical points of reference span different eras: from the Late Bronze Age through the Great Moravian Empire to the municipality’s first recorded mention.

The history of the village also includes its traditional rural economy. In the 17th century, Bitarová had carp ponds where people also fished. Beekeeping and sheep farming were also part of the traditional economy. These details offer insight into past local activities; they do not describe current visitor services.

Church and Local Custom

The Church of Saint Augustine, associated with the year 1992, is part of the village’s history. Another cultural reference is the old custom of lighting the Jánska vatra bonfire. In 2020, the municipality decided to revive this custom. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check locally in advance whether and when it will take place.
