In Strečno, the medieval castle, the Váh landscape and marked trails offer visitors a range of experiences. The preserved ruins of Strečno Castle rise above the historic road between Žilina and Vrútky. The Domašínsky meander Nature Monument also defines the landscape: it protects the most distinctive section of the Váh River as it cuts through the Little Fatra.

Castle Visit and Paseka

An exhibition at Strečno Castle presents the prehistoric and historical past of the castle and the surrounding region. The castle can be visited as part of a guided tour led by an instructor. Plan your visit accordingly and check the latest tour arrangements in advance.

In 2013, a free recreational area featuring the medieval village of Paseka was established below the castle. Paseka consists of five small, fully equipped wooden houses with thatched roofs, a working bell tower and a well. This offers two distinct ways to visit: a guided castle tour with an exhibition, and a freely accessible recreational area with a village ensemble.

The Váh, Starý hrad and the Views

A raft trip with Plte Strečno offers views from the Váh of both Strečno Castle and Starý hrad. The trip starts at the Bariérová landing stage and ends at the ferry in Strečno. An experienced raftsman leads the trip and shares insights into the history and traditions of rafting along the way. As the route and arrangements may change, we recommend checking the latest information before setting off.

The nearby ruins of Starý hrad rise above Strečno Castle in the Domašínsky meander of the Váh. They were first mentioned in documents in 1241 as royal property. This date marks the first written mention; together with the present-day ruins of Strečno Castle, it provides another historical point of interest for your visit.

From the wooden lookout tower on Špicák, you can see the Žilina Basin, the ridge of the Little Fatra, parts of the Kysuce Highlands and the Strážov Mountains. You can also see four castles from there: Strečno, Starý hrad, Budatín Castle and Lietava Castle.

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads to the lookout tower from the car park below the castle. Another access route is the green-and-white-marked educational trail, which starts in the centre of Strečno. The two routes have different starting points and trail markings; check current trail conditions before setting out. As a separate cycling route, the green-marked, relatively challenging Martin (ATC)–Strečno mountain bike trail ends below Strečno Castle.

Church and Memorial Sites

The present-day masonry Church of St. Sophia was built in 1847. Every year during the Christmas holidays, a mechanical Nativity scene is made accessible there. Exact dates may vary, so check in advance whether it will be accessible around Christmas.

The memorial to the French partisans stands on Zvonica Hill. The crypt below contains the remains of 24 partisans. Memorial events marking the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising are held there every year. As well as castle and landscape experiences, memorial sites and recurring commemorations are among the things to consider when planning your stay in Strečno.
