Hiking Trails, Rocks and a Cycling Route

The municipality’s cadastral area includes the Súľovské skaly and Skalky subunits of the Súľovské vrchy; they are part of the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The Súľovské skaly are home to named rock towers, rock needles, rock walls, rock windows and rock arches. In total, approximately 50 rock formations there have been named. This variety gives the rocky landscape its distinctive character and offers nature enthusiasts a range of formations to look out for.

A green-marked hiking trail runs from Rajecké Teplice via Skalky and Lietavská Svinná to Lietava Castle and continues towards Žilina. From Lietavská Svinná, another green-marked hiking trail leads to the summit of Cibuľník in about 45 minutes, with an elevation gain of 213 metres, and offers beautiful views. The trails offer different experiences: one route connects several places with the castle and continues towards Žilina; the other has a named summit as its destination and gives an approximate walking time and elevation gain. As trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check the route information before setting out.

The local tourist club maintains marked hiking trails and has set up benches and tables in the Krieš and Cibuľník areas. If you prefer cycling, you can follow regional cycling route 5405 Lietavská Lúčka–Porúbka. It runs via Babkov to Lietavská Svinná. This gives you a choice of a named hiking route, a specific summit destination and a regional cycling route with its own course.

Local History and Cultural Sights

Dom spomienok is a permanent exhibition of historical objects from Lietavská Svinná-Babkov. The collection includes furniture, tools, clothing, documents and photographs, most of which come from the municipality. The exhibition thus brings together everyday objects with written and photographic mementos. Visits to Dom spomienok are possible by arrangement.

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Lietavská Svinná dates from 1993. Lietavská Svinná-Babkov’s masonry bell tower also houses a Renaissance bell dating from 1606. It probably came from the chapel at Lietava Castle. A 2023 article describes the bell as still functional and traditionally rung by hand.

Nearby Lietava Castle rises above the village entrance. The castle has a permanent exhibition on the history of the castle, archaeological finds and firearms; a tactile exhibition has also been added. One of the local tourist club’s traditional annual events held there is the opening of the hiking season in Žilina District, known as “100 jarných kilometrov”. During Lent, a Way of the Cross takes place daily from the cemetery in Svinná to Krieš.
