Pustý hrad and Zvolenský zámok give Zvolen two distinctive historical landmarks. Those planning a stay can combine these castles with educational trails and protected landscapes in the Zvolen District—or choose their own focus, balancing culture, nature and spas.

Castles and History

The Barborská cesta leads to Pustý hrad and Zvolenský zámok in Zvolen. The approximately 190-kilometre route can be completed on foot or by bicycle along marked trails; check the current signs and trail conditions in advance. Pustý hrad covers 4.7 hectares and is one of Slovakia’s largest fortified complexes. The castle was the seat of the župans of Zvolenská župa. Its royal residential tower in Dolný Pustý hrad served in particular as a residence for Hungarian kings in the 13th century.

Zvolenský zámok was built between 1370 and 1382 as a Gothic hunting lodge for King Louis I the Great of the House of Anjou. Its design was inspired by Italian city palaces. The Gothic art lapidarium brings together architectural fragments and stone elements from the castle and its chapel dating from the 14th century, as well as transferred wall paintings from Zvolen’s former parish church dating from the mid-15th century. The main palace also houses exhibitions and collections of the Slovak National Gallery, whose collection focuses on European painting from the 16th to the 19th century.

Educational Trails and Protected Nature

Two educational trails offer a choice based on walking time and elevation gain. The Náučný chodník Pustý hrad is of moderate difficulty, 6.4 kilometres long, and has an elevation gain of 271 metres and a stated walking time of three hours. Its 20 information panels cover natural and historical attractions in this part of the Zvolenská kotlina. The Náučný chodník Boky runs through the municipality of Budča and the Boky National Nature Reserve. At 5.1 kilometres, it is shorter, but has an elevation gain of 299 metres; the walking time is about 2.5 to 3 hours. The choice can therefore be based on distance and elevation profile, while the estimated times overlap. Trail conditions may change.

The Boky Nature Reserve has been a Natura 2000 site of European importance since 2004. It is also home to Čertova skala: an estimated 17-tonne andesite rock shaped like a mushroom, connected to the conglomerate bedrock by a narrow neck. Another geological destination is the protected natural landmark Turovský sopúch in Turová in the Zvolen District. This exposed volcanic vent is evidence of volcanic activity in the Tertiary Kremnica stratovolcano.

The protected natural landmark Zolniansky lahar is also in the Zvolen District, in Zolná. A green-marked hiking trail towards Sliač runs along its boundary; the rock face is visible from the trail. A total of 552 species of higher plants have been recorded in the Slatina Valley. These places offer different points of interest: geological formations, marked trails and the valley’s plant life.

Spas and Guided Tours

Kúpele Sliač also welcomes visitors who are not staying overnight, offering a thermal bath, swimming pool, sauna, treatments and walks in the spa park. Confirm the arrangements before travelling. The Zvolen District’s bathing options also include the Termálne kúpalisko Kúpele Sliač. It uses carbon-dioxide-rich spring water and has a pool for adults as well as a small, round children’s pool. Opening times and services may vary by season. Kúpele Kováčová uses healing thermal mineral water for treatments including sitz baths, tub baths, hydromassage, pearl baths and water exercises.

For an insight into the city’s history, consider a guided tour offered by the Zvolen Information Centre. Tours are available year-round, including outside the tourist season, in Slovak and English; registration is required at least three days in advance.

Museums, Crafts and Regional Specialties

The Lesnícke a drevárske múzeum documents forestry and wood processing throughout Slovakia, as well as the regional history of the Zvolen area. Traditional woodworking techniques featured include splitting, hewing, framing, turning and joinery. The museum is housed in burgher houses dating from the first half of the 16th century, which are national cultural monuments.

Regional foods also have a long history: the production of bryndza in Zvolenská Slatina was established by the Molecovci family in 1797. The Bryndziareň claims to be the world’s oldest bryndza dairy still in operation. At the Expozícia História Očovej, visitors can try Očovská Rožovka, a traditional rye spirit; confirm the current arrangements before visiting.
