Zvolen offers a range of experiences for a trip: architectural and art history, an extensive castle complex, plant diversity and an activity on the Hron. If you are looking for a hotel in Zvolen, you can consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay. The places and activities each offer something different, and you can choose according to your interests.

Cultural monuments and architectural history

Zvolenský zámok is a Gothic building with Renaissance outer fortifications and is listed as a national cultural monument. Farský kostol Svätej Alžbety presents a different architectural style: the original Romanesque church dates from 1244 to 1250 and is also a national cultural monument. The castle thus combines Gothic architecture and Renaissance fortifications, while the church represents Romanesque architectural history.

Pustý hrad adds to the picture as a castle ruin above the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers. Its fortified area covered 7.6 hectares, making the complex one of the largest castles in Europe.

Art in the castle and a model in the park

The “Gothic Art” exhibition at Zvolenský zámok features a collection of medieval sculptures and paintings, with more than 80 sculptures and paintings. If you plan to visit the exhibition, check the latest exhibition information and opening hours beforehand. Below the castle, a model of the armoured train Hurban is located in Štefan Višňovský Park.

Pustý hrad, trails and nature

The Pustý hrad site, including the area of ongoing archaeological research, is open to the public; the Pustý hrad nature trail leads there. The complex offers views of the Zvolen Basin and the surrounding mountain ranges. This place brings together castle ruins, an area of archaeological research and views across the landscape.

A 5.2-kilometre-long nature trail runs through oak-hornbeam forests. Eight multimedia information panels cover the local fauna and flora.

The arboretum is home to Slovakia’s largest rose collection, with 660 varieties. It also has an extensive collection of more than 500 cactus and succulent species from South America. The roses are counted by variety, while the cacti and succulents are counted by species. If you are choosing a nature theme, this is a clear distinction between the rose collection and South American plant species.

A raft trip on the Hron

Tancujúce plte na Hrone is a leisure and educational rafting attraction on the Hron. The main route takes two hours and runs from Zvolen to the water sports camp in the municipality of Budča. The trip uses rafts specially equipped for tourist outings, with space for twelve people. As operations may be seasonal, check whether trips are available during your travel dates before making plans.

Zvolenský zámok is within walking distance of Zvolen railway and bus stations. If you are arriving by train or bus, you can take this into account when planning a visit to the castle.
