Očová can be explored through several specific travel interests: churches and folk culture, craftsmanship, trails in the Poľana area, and aviation. When planning a stay, it helps to decide early on what you would like to focus on. Historic architecture, marked hiking trails and local exhibitions appeal to different interests. This lets you plan your time around the themes you actually want to experience.

Churches, History and Places of Remembrance

The Roman Catholic Church in Očová was built in the 14th century. During the period of the Turkish threat, it was fortified with a stone wall. The church houses an altar depicting the Death of the Virgin Mary, from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča, dated 1514–1515. The building’s history and the altar offer two distinct points of interest as you explore the town’s historic heritage.

The Protestant church has its own history: the Neoclassical Toleration Church was built in 1785. After a fire in 1867, repairs in 1868 raised the building and added a tower. Visits must be arranged in advance by telephone. Bear this in mind when planning a visit to the church.

A monument to Ján Berky Mrenica stands in front of the cultural centre. It was unveiled on the tenth anniversary of his death and adds a place of remembrance in a public space to the historic churches.

Crafts and Exhibitions

Remeselný dvor is located in the former Kováčov Mill in Očová, built in 1918; the mill also had a blacksmith’s workshop. Activities for visitors include baking in a bread oven. The Očovské minimúzeum displays traditional festive and work clothing, traditional footwear, household items and tools in two rooms. In March 2024, a renovated memorial room for Matej Bel Funtík opened at Remeselný dvor. It presents his life, studies, work and scholarly writings.

An exhibition in Očová features embroidery made with a curved needle, the making of fujara flutes and whistles, loom weaving, architecture, and folk singing and dancing. During an exhibition visit in Očová, you can also sample Očovská Rožovka, a typical rye spirit.

Folk Culture and Events

Očovská folklórna hruda is a traditional folk culture festival held in Očová since 2004. The programme includes a craft fair, workshops led by master craftspeople and traditional local products. The festival exhibitions are held mostly at Remeselný dvor. So the event is about more than watching: crafts, products and exhibitions provide other specific themes for your stay. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates of the relevant edition.

Poľana and Marked Trails

The eastern part of Očová’s municipal area lies within the Poľana Protected Landscape Area. The Poľana Natura 2000 site also includes Očová’s cadastral area. Its varied landscape is shaped by different forest habitats, pastures and agricultural land. The Zadná Poľana National Nature Reserve also extends into the cadastral area. These details refer to different protected areas and boundaries; they do not describe the entire municipal area as a single protected site.

Two marked hiking trails follow different routes. The blue-marked trail runs through Očová via the Hrochotská Valley towards Kyslinky, where it climbs in three directions to the ridge of the Poľana massif. The green-marked trail runs through Očová below Poľana, continuing via Sudová and Trnavy through the Suchohradné Valley to the Príslopy saddle and down to Kyslinky. The named waypoints distinguish the routes: the blue trail leads to the ridge, while the green trail passes over the Príslopy saddle to Kyslinky.

A short section of the red-marked Rudná Magistrála touches Očová’s eastern cadastral boundary. As local trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check your planned route before setting out.

Flight Experiences and Getting Around

Aeroklub Očová offers experience flights from Očová airfield. The aerobatic team Očovskí Bačovia is a separate activity group that has been part of the aeroclub since its founding in 1981. After releasing the tow ropes, the team performs glider formations with smoke effects. Both activities are related to aviation, but offer different experiences: an experience flight and a described air display.

There is a bus stop directly in front of Remeselný dvor, with services towards Zvolen, Dúbravy or Detva PPS. If you plan to travel in one of these directions, check the timetable before departure, as bus services may change.
