If you choose a destination based on its cultural themes, Podzámčok offers several distinct points of interest: the Church of St. John the Baptist in the village centre, the wooden bell tower on a hill near the church, and the village’s folklore tradition. There is also the history of the ruins of Dobronivá Castle. The thematic range extends from medieval defensive functions and architectural evidence to songs, dances, traditional costumes and customs. The historical dates and regularly prepared folklore programmes offer different perspectives on the village’s cultural themes.

Dobronivá Castle and its historical context

The ruins of Dobronivá Castle probably originated as a watchtower built after the Tatar invasion, in the second half of the 13th century, along an old trade route south of Zvolen. The estimated date and the watch function together present the castle as part of a medieval system of transport and security.

A short, unmarked path of 500 metres leads from the end of a road to the ruins of Dobronivá Castle. Check the route before visiting, as trail details may change. The castle grounds contain a recreational park with benches, a fire pit and an information board. Thus, alongside its historical remains, the site includes a designated recreational area with several specific facilities.

Church and wooden bell tower

The Church of St. John the Baptist stands in the centre of Podzámčok; it was consecrated on 16 November 2002. On a hill near the church stands the wooden bell tower, built in 1868. It houses a rare late Baroque bell dating from 1782, made by bell founder Ján Juraj Knobloch of Banská Bystrica. The bell is therefore 86 years older than the tower that houses it. The church, tower and bell represent different points in time: a consecration, the construction of a building and an older bell.

Folklore, programmes and festival tradition

Every year, the Podzámočan folklore group prepares programmes showcasing dances, songs, customs and traditions from Podzámčok. It preserves original songs from the village and presents local traditions and costumes in themed programmes. Its work brings together several forms of local cultural heritage. The group performed its programme “Podzámocká svadba” at a national showcase of rural folklore in Likavka. This performance adds a specific example from the group’s performance history to the description of its annual programmes.

The “Na sv. Jána” folklore festival in Podzámčok is also regionally significant and preserves folk traditions and customs. The programme for 20 June 2026 included performances by children from Podzámčok and the Podzámočan folklore group, as well as a bonfire. The festival and the group’s work offer different perspectives: here, individual events in a festival programme take centre stage; there, the focus is on the themed performances prepared each year.

These themes can therefore be clearly distinguished when choosing cultural attractions: the castle, church, bell tower and bell convey historical and architectural connections; the group and folklore festival show how songs, dances, costumes and customs feature in performances.
