If culture and history, hiking or cycling are on your travel agenda, Babiná offers several distinct points of interest. The protected historic zone and individual buildings define its cultural and historical focus; hiking trails meet in the centre, while the microregion’s cycling network offers its own way to explore. You can decide whether local history, a hike or a bike ride will be the main focus of your stay.

Historic Zone and Landscape

The Babiná heritage conservation zone was designated on 25 September 2000. The protected historic zone is characterised by an organically grouped street-settlement pattern and an irregular layout. To understand it, it is important to consider how the street plan and overall layout work together, rather than looking only at individual buildings. The zone also offers panoramic views, complemented by the surrounding landscape of the Štiavnické vrchy. The settlement pattern and views of the landscape thus provide two different perspectives on Babiná.

Church, Farmhouse and Earlier Traces

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Matthew is Romanesque and was built between 1242 and 1254. Its historic furnishings include a Romanesque stone baptismal font from the 13th century and a Gothic bell dating from 1358, bearing a Gothic inscription. The building and its furnishings belong to different periods: the construction phase and baptismal font date to the 13th century, while the bell dates to the 14th century.

The folk farmhouse in Babiná was built in 1820. Its U-shaped layout is complemented by later outbuildings, including granaries, stables and a barn. The complex therefore encompasses more than just the residence: living and agricultural areas form part of a shared farmyard layout. The Pod múrom archaeological site is also part of the history of the village. It contains pottery shards and bronze objects from the later prehistoric period. The span of time thus stretches from prehistoric finds to buildings from the 19th century.

Hiking Trails and Cycling

The centre of Babiná is a hiking trail junction, particularly for the Rudná magistrála. Another way to explore the hiking trails is the traditional “Chotárom obce” hiking event. It takes place annually and follows forest paths and meadows into remote parts of the municipality. The trail junction and the hiking event offer different ways to plan: one connects you to hiking trails, while the other is a specific annual event with a route through varied landscapes. If you plan to time your trip around the event, check the date in advance.

The PK microregion cycling network comprises three routes, marked in green, blue and yellow. Together, they are 36.30 kilometres long and connect the microregion’s municipalities. This is the combined length of all three routes, not the length of each individual route. A wooden information board beside the central playground in Babiná displays the entire cycling network and provides an overview of the routes.
