Latvia Between Art Nouveau, Bogs and Culture

Latvia offers different perspectives on architecture, history and landscape: Riga’s Art Nouveau stands alongside the historic streets of Kuldīga, the Ķemeri bogs and the forests of Gauja National Park. Latvian musical traditions and regional cuisine also shape the journey. You can easily choose which places to include based on the experiences that interest you most.

Cities, Architecture and Museums

According to UNESCO, Riga’s historic centre has the world’s most significant concentration of Art Nouveau architecture. Riga Castle houses the Latvian National History Museum, in a building that is also architecturally striking. The “Streaming Time” exhibition combines more than 1,500 historical objects with digital content. A tour of the castle includes 17 stops across all floors; the “Explorer’s Attic” is an educational space for families with children and for school students. Kuldīga, in western Latvia, offers a different urban perspective. The city is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a traditional urban settlement. Much of its historic street plan has been preserved; traditional wooden architecture stands alongside styles shaped by external influences. The rivers are also part of the cityscape: the confluence of the Venta and the smaller Alekšupīte contributes to Kuldīga’s distinctive landscape.

Those interested in natural history will find several themed exhibitions at the Latvian National Museum of Natural History in Riga. “Birds of Latvia” features 292 of the approximately 360 bird species found in Latvia. The mammal exhibition presents 83 specimens from 49 species, while the mineralogy exhibition includes more than 400 minerals; another exhibition explores the diversity of Latvian plants and fungi. The museum is housed in a historic building designated a state cultural monument. It has been adapted, where possible, for people with functional limitations and visitors with strollers. Castles and Living Traditions

At Rundāle Palace, the Golden Hall, White Hall and Grand Gallery are open to the public. The French Garden and Rose Garden are also open to visitors. The museum features exhibitions on applied art, fine art and history. The palace also hosts the Early Music Festival and classical music concerts. The Latvian Song and Dance Celebration provides a grand shared setting for cultural traditions: UNESCO recognized the tradition in 2003, and in 2008 it was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The nationwide celebrations last a week and take place every five years. They usually bring together more than 30,000 participants, although numbers vary from one edition to another. Bog Landscapes and National Parks

Latvia has four national parks. Gauja National Park is the largest and oldest, covering more than 90,000 hectares. Alongside its natural attractions, it has a remarkable concentration of history: the park contains more than 500 cultural and historical monuments, including hillforts, brick castles, churches, manor houses, and watermills and windmills. The sandstone formations also tell a story of the landscape’s distant past: they were formed 350 to 370 million years ago.

Ķemeri National Park showcases another side of Latvia’s nature. Its diverse wetland landscape includes the Great Ķemeri Bog, one of the largest of its kind in Latvia. Visitors can walk the boardwalk through the bog at sunrise, and cycling is possible on the Green Dune bicycle route. Check current access conditions for your planned visit. There is a birdwatching tower at Lake Kanieris. The Kanieris Hillfort Trail runs from the Antinciems–Caukciems road to the hillfort and through a fen. These experiences differ in both landscape and activity, from birdwatching to trails through the bog.

Cuisine and Practical Information

Potatoes, cabbage, rye bread and fish are common in everyday Latvian cuisine. The annual Home Cafe Days, held between July and September, offer a seasonal opportunity to experience regional cuisine: for a weekend or one to two days, farmsteads and country homes become restaurants. Check the dates and participating locations in advance.

The rail network can also be useful when planning travel between cities. It connects Riga with Liepāja, Sigulda, Cēsis, Jelgava and Rēzekne; schedules and connections may change, so check the latest information with the operator. Riga International Airport is about ten kilometres southwest of central Riga and can be reached by public transport, taxi or car sharing. These transport options may also change.
