In Ropaži Municipality, reasons to visit range from protected landscapes and nature trails to lakes and historic buildings. Different places offer different highlights: some invite visitors to discover nature along educational trails, while others offer water sports or an insight into Latvian cultural heritage.

Eskers and nature trails

Lielie Kangari is Latvia’s largest esker and a nature reserve that lies partly in Ropažu Municipality. The protected area covers 1,972.4 hectares in Ropažu Municipality and Suntaži Parish in Ogres Municipality; it has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2005. The area has a 33.5-metre-high observation tower and a two-kilometre nature trail with information and activity stations.

The Diž-Ozolu nature trail passes through oak stands. Information boards focus on the trees and bee shelters; picnic and fire sites are available along the trail. The Tumšupes meži nature reserve features a different kind of forest landscape: its protected habitats include swamp and floodplain forests, pristine raised bogs, boreal forests and lichen-rich pine forests, as well as old mixed deciduous forests and natural watercourses.

The Zaķumuiža nature trail is almost two kilometres long and moderately difficult. It runs through an old manor park with century-old trees, as well as a variety of plants, insects and birds. The trail is suitable for walking with a stroller and for cycling; cross-country skiing is possible there in winter. The Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš educational trail is about two kilometres long for a round trip. Its information boards cover nature, animals and insects, and display quotes by the writer. The stated lengths are similar, but the described highlights differ: for Zaķumuiža, the difficulty level and possible activities are specified, while the Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš trail focuses on its information boards and quotes.

Lakes and outdoor activities

At Lake Ulbroka, a walking and activity trail about one kilometre long leads to an observation platform on the lake, swimming areas, sports grounds, outdoor exercise equipment, a skatepark, and an obstacle and activity course. The recreation area also includes a beach, volleyball and football courts, and a climbing wall.

The Saurieši gravel pit area comprises four bodies of water separated by roads and paths. Swimming, boating and fishing are possible there; the paths are suitable for walking, running and cycling. The regional Dreiliņi–Mazozoli cycling route (Lejasdaugava–Ogre River Valley, No. 12) also passes through the area. This combination of paths and bodies of water offers several ways to enjoy the outdoors.

At LANGHO on the shore of Lake Langstiņi, SUP boards, catamarans and boats are available for hire. Motorised vehicles are not allowed on the lake. The LANGHO café serves sweet and savoury Belgian waffles, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks; check the café’s seasonal availability before travelling.

Cultural heritage and events

The ruins of Ropaži Castle are on the bank of the Lielā Jugla, beside the P10 road. They are the remains of a castle built by Teutonic Order brothers in the 14th century. Ropaži Church is a Neo-Gothic brick church dating from 1893. Restoration work has been carried out there since 1997; if you are planning a visit, check the current scope of the work beforehand.

Today’s Ropaži Manor House was built in the early 19th century on the site of an 18th-century wooden manor house and completed in 1804. It has been a state-protected cultural monument since 2007. Līgo Park preserves Latvian cultural heritage and features eleven stone sculptures bearing Latvian ornamental symbols. During the summer season, it hosts dance and choir concerts, open-air theatre performances and festivals. For specific dates, it is advisable to check the events programme before travelling.

The “Ulbrokas Pērle” Cultural Centre opened in 2020. It hosts cultural events in various genres and styles and has two concert halls. Along with the historic sites and seasonal programme at Līgo Park, it adds further cultural attractions to the area’s nature and water activities.
