Tukuma Municipality: Birdlife, Culture and Culinary Experiences
Accommodation in Tukuma Municipality
In Tukuma Municipality, nature watching, cultural attractions and hands-on activities offer different ways to experience the region. You can explore birdlife, visit exhibitions, plan a cycling tour, or make regional tastings and workshops the focus of your stay. The following places and activities each offer something different.
Birdlife and Lake Landscapes
In the nature park at Lake Engure, 186 bird species breed. A total of 844 vascular plant species have also been recorded around the lake. The ecosystem at Lake KaÅieris includes 68 breeding bird species. The lake lies within the municipalities of Lapmežciems and SmÄrde; most of it is in the nature protection zone of Ķemeri National Park, with a small part in the nature reserve zone.
At the KaÅieris birdwatching tower, the focus is on observing birds with views across the lake landscape. The well-equipped KaÅieris Castle Hill Trail offers a different perspective: from there, you can see the lake and the historic castle hill. You can choose between a viewpoint for birdwatching and a trail that takes in both landscape features.
Cultural Stories in Tukums and Jaunmokas
The historic interiors of Durbe Palace offer a glimpse into German Baltic culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In Tukums, the exhibition āRainis and Tukumsā focuses on a specific place in the museumās history: it is housed in the room where the first Rainis Museum operated from 1929 to 1937. The exhibition āStories of Our Own, Not Strangersāā in the Palace Tower explores events in Tukums during the 20th century through peopleās life stories.
Jaunmokas Palace also brings together architectural history and a contemporary exhibition theme. The palace was built in 1901 as a hunting lodge; the Jaunmokas Palace Forest Museum features interactive forest exhibitions. Together, these cultural sites offer different ways to explore the area: through historic interiors, exhibitions about people and events, or forest-related themes.
Cycling Tours and Outdoor Trails
The āCastles Around Tukumsā cycling route starts and ends at Tukums I railway station and is signposted with cycling route marker number 574. It is about 29 kilometres long, with around 11 kilometres on gravel and field roads. As surface conditions can change, check the current trail conditions before setting out. If travelling from Riga, you can take the train to Tukums and start the cycling tour at Tukums I railway station. Check the current timetable when planning your trip.
The shorter āAround Engureā circuit is described as being about 14 kilometres long; some sections can also be covered by bicycle. The route connects to the cycling trails around Lake Valgums created by āValguma pasaule.ā The long-distance JÅ«rtaka hiking trail (E9) also runs along the coast, making it possible to continue your walk the following day. This gives you a choice of different types of tour: a longer cycling loop with specified road surfaces, a shorter circular route, or a hike that can extend over several days.
Tastings and Hands-On Activities
At Abavas winery, you can enjoy tastings and guided tours on site. The Abava wine tasting includes six different drinks. The family-run Jaunpils Brewery is located in the centre of Jaunpils, in a barn built in 1860; guided tours and tastings can be arranged in advance.
For a different culinary experience, the tavern at Jaunpils Castle serves medieval feasts based on old recipes. These must be ordered at least two days in advance. The herbal tea experience at Jaunmokas includes ten different herbal teas as well as unusual jams and syrups; this also requires advance arrangements. In PÅ«re, the Pure Chocolate Museum offers chocolate-making workshops. If you would rather try a traditional craft, you can weave at the āWeaving Workshopā and learn simple techniques. The activities differ not only in theme but also in how you take part: from tastings and guided tours to hands-on experiences.
