Lapmežciems between the coast and the lake
Accommodation in Lapmežciems
Lapmežciems lies on a narrow strip of land between the Gulf of Riga and Lake Kaņieris. The sea and the lake give the description of the area a clear geographical context. At the same time, Lapmežciems continues to be associated with the charm of life in a fishing village. The destination can be considered through several specific themes: the coast, nature trails and a history that ranges from archaeological traces to written records.
Beach, trails and nature watching
Lapmežciems–Bigauņciems Beach lies on the border between Lapmežciems and Bigauņciems. It can be reached via the Kupskalnu Nature Trail; both the beach and the trail are signposted. If the beach is an important part of your travel plans, check local conditions before your visit, as they may change.
A footpath in Kupskalna Nature Park follows the Siliņupe River to the sea. There you can see the old Lapmežciems pier. The route connects the river with the coast and views of the old pier—a specific connection to nature and the area for anyone who wants to explore Lapmežciems on foot.
The coast near the mouth of the Starpiņupe River, where it flows into the Gulf of Riga, is also a place for birdwatching. Alongside the beach and walking trails, Lapmežciems therefore offers another way to enjoy nature by the water.
The Siliņupe swimming area in Lapmežciems has a changing cabin, two benches and waste bins. Before your visit, check whether these facilities are currently available.
Fishing village and local history
Lapmežciems was first mentioned in a fief register on 17 June 1515. The Siliņupe settlement dates back much further, to the 3rd–2nd millennium BC. Archaeological finds include artefacts made of stone, flint, bone, amber and wood. The time between the settlement and the first written mention offers two distinct historical perspectives on Lapmežciems.
The Lapmežciems Museum is dedicated to the history of fishing and the lives and work of fishers. It also offers interactive activities about historical place names and the natural surroundings of Lapmežciems. The museum therefore explores both life and work in the area and its names and nature.
The local food scene includes the “Gardo zivju namiņš” fish kiosk, which serves smoked fish, salmon rolls and coffee. If you plan to stop there, check the current menu and opening status beforehand, as both may change.
When looking for a hotel in Lapmežciems, you can first consider whether the coast, nature watching or local history will be the deciding factor for your stay.
