Rideļi offers two sides to a stay: the history of the Rideļu dzirnavas and activities in the surrounding landscape. The mill museum, Rideļu Mill Lake and guided tours create a distinctive cultural and natural profile. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Rideļi, you can start by considering whether mill history, time outdoors or both will shape your stay.

Mill Culture and Manor History

The Rideļu dzirnavas were built in 1863. After the land reform of 1920, they came into the possession of the Kambala family. In 2002, they were included in the European Heritage of Industrial Culture. This timeline connects the year they were built with their later ownership history and recognition as industrial heritage.

The mill museum is housed across three floors of the Rideļu dzirnavas. The museum includes the educational short film “No grauda līdz maizei,” meaning “From Grain to Bread.” The film’s title provides a clear thematic link to the mill and the journey from grain to bread.

When the mill museum opened, an interactive programme was created featuring workshops led by the miller for children, school pupils and families. Rideļu Manor is one of four manor estates in Sēme Parish that have survived to this day. The mill and manor therefore offer different ways to explore cultural history: the history of a mill and the surviving manor heritage of the parish.

Lake, Tours and Cycling Route

Rideļu Mill Lake lies in the Kalnupe Valley. The lake is home to pike, perch, roach, tench and crucian carp. A special SUP route crosses a reed-filled labyrinth on the water; prior arrangements are required to use it.

TIKAI JUST offers guided hikes through the forests of Rideļi and along lakes and rivers. Advance booking is required for guided hikes and most TIKAI JUST routes. For most routes, the starting and finishing points are at the Rideļu dzirnavas.

The “Over the hills and to the sea” cycling route can be extended from Zentene through Rideļi, past the Rideļu dzirnavas, towards Engure and the sea. The extension covers 7 km of gravel road and 15 km of asphalt road in each direction. As road surfaces and conditions can change, check current conditions before setting out.

The activities differ in their setting and planning requirements: the SUP route crosses a reed labyrinth, while the hikes are guided and pass through forests and along waterways. The cycling extension specifies the distance and road surfaces in each direction. This lets you choose between a water activity, a guided hike and a cycling route based on what you would most like to do.

Pancake Experience

The COPE café at the Rideļu dzirnavas offers a pancake experience where guests fill their own pancakes with sweet or savoury ingredients. Advance booking is required for this offering.
