A striking natural feature is Lielie Kangari: the ridge is Latvia’s largest esker ridge, reaches an absolute height of 78 metres and extends for about 26 kilometres. The nature reserve of the same name lies in Ropažu Municipality and Suntaži Parish in Ogres Municipality. The area has a 33.5-metre-high observation tower and a two-kilometre nature trail with information and health stations.

Nature Trails and Landscapes

The Zaķumuiža nature trail passes through an old manor park with centuries-old trees, plants, insects and birds. It is almost two kilometres long and classified as moderately difficult. Handrails are provided on steeper sections, and two bridges cross the manor’s pond system. The trail can be used year-round on foot, with a stroller or by bicycle, and in winter on skis.

Another focus awaits you on the Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš Discovery Trail. The round trip is about two kilometres long. Information boards explore nature, animals and insects, and are complemented by quotes from the writer. By comparison, the Lielie Kangari nature trail combines information about nature and health stations with an observation tower. The routes therefore offer different ways to enjoy an outing in the countryside.

Water, Exercise and Activities

The Saurieši quarry area comprises four bodies of water, separated by roads and paths. The paths are suitable for walking, running, cycling and active recreation. There are swimming areas nearby, and other possible activities include swimming, boating and fishing. Regional cycle route No. 12—Dreiliņi–Mazozoli, also known as Lejasdaugava–Ogres River Valley—passes through the quarry area. Check the current route before setting off.

At Lake Ulbroka, an approximately one-kilometre walking and play trail leads to an observation platform in the lake. Along the route are swimming areas, sports grounds, outdoor exercise equipment, a skate park, and obstacle and activity courses. The 333 sports complex adds karting, a driver training course, an off-road park, a motocross and enduro park, and a water bubble park. Facilities and operating hours may change; check current operating information before travelling.

Cultural Heritage and Latvian Traditions

The ruins of Ropaži Castle recall a castle built by the Brothers of the Teutonic Order in the 14th century and burned down by Muscovite troops in 1559. The ruins lie on the bank of the Lielā Jugla, beside regional road P10 in Ropaži Parish. Ropaži Church also combines different periods of construction: the Neo-Gothic brick church was built in 1893 on the site of an earlier wooden church.

At Kangari Railway Station, railway history can be traced through specific dates. It opened on 26 November 1935 on the Riga–Ērgļi line; the two-storey brick station building was completed in November 1937. Today, it is a cultural monument of local significance. Līgo Park, meanwhile, features eleven stone sculptures bearing Latvian ornamental symbols, created by sculptor Uldis Sterģis. Oak and birch groves frame the landscape, and the life-size sculptures invite visitors to explore the ornaments. During the summer season, the park hosts dance and choral music concerts, open-air theatre performances and festivals. The programme may change.

The “Krīvu klēts” museum welcomes tourist groups and showcases traditional activities on a Latvian farm. The complex includes an old barn, a crafts workshop and a forge. Visitors are welcomed seasonally, from May to October. By prior arrangement, “Cira kāta” soup, coffee, tea, cake and non-alcoholic refreshments are available. Arrange your visit and refreshments in advance, as these are seasonal and require a reservation. At the Sauleskalns Crafts House, you can book workshops such as bread- or sklandrausis-baking, pottery, felting, candle-making, or making birdhouses and torches; Latvian traditions are also part of the programme. Workshop availability may change.

At Alpu zirgi, families can meet domestic animals and explore a one-kilometre forest trail on horseback or on foot. Confirm the current visiting arrangements in advance. For information and trip planning, the tourism information point in Ropaži is located at Centra iela 3, Ropaži, Ropažu Municipality, LV-2135. The tourism information centres provide information about recreation and tourism opportunities in Ropažu Municipality and the Pierīga region, and help organise trips. Opening hours and services may change; check them before your trip.
