Kangaru Station and the natural attractions around Kangari offer different focuses for a trip. The railway history spans several lines and periods; the ridge, nature reserve, observation tower and trail provide further specific points of interest.

Kangaru Station and Railway History

Kangaru railway station opened on 26 November 1935 on the Riga–Ērgļi railway line. Its two-storey brick building was constructed in November 1937 to a design by architect Voldemārs Ozoliņš. The building is a cultural monument of local significance. The station’s opening and the construction of its building therefore took place in different years.

In 1935, Kangari was one of five railway stations in Ropažu pagasts. Another historical railway connection is the 600 mm narrow-gauge railway from Ikšķile to Ropažu muiža Manor, where Kangari was a stopping point. This line was actively used in 1919 during the Latvian War of Independence. The narrow-gauge railway and the station on the Riga–Ērgļi line are therefore two distinct railway connections: a line used in 1919 and a station that opened in 1935.

The Landscape Around Kangari

The Lielie Kangari esker ridge near Kangari has a relative height of 27 metres and reaches 78 metres above sea level. These figures describe different measures of elevation: 27 metres is the relative height of the esker ridge, while 78 metres is its height above sea level. The Lielie Kangari nature reserve includes Kangaru Lake and Lielais Kangaru Bog.

There is also a 33-metre-high observation tower nearby. From its viewing platform, you can see Kangaru Lake and Lielkangaru Bog. The heights mentioned therefore refer to three different things: the relief of the esker ridge, its elevation above sea level, and the height of the tower. The lake and bog are both landscape features of the nature reserve and landmarks in the view from the tower.

Trails, Activity and Guided Walks

At the start of the Lielo Kangaru trail, there is a fitness trail that invites visitors to exercise and get active. Along the trail, information boards featuring photographs share stories and legends about events, places, characters and phenomena in the surrounding area. The two offerings have different focuses: the fitness trail encourages movement, while the boards explore stories from the area.

Guided bog-shoe walks can be booked with Purva bridēji in the area. If you plan to include such a tour in your trip, check availability in advance. The fitness trail, illustrated stories along the route and a guided bog experience are different ways to enjoy the area.

Zaļais ceļš and the Retro Running Festival

A section of Zaļais ceļš in Ropažu novads forms part of the Riga–Pskov GreenWays route. At the 2026 Retro Running Festival, the route followed Zaļais ceļš, the former Riga–Ērgļi railway line, from Kangaru Station to Bajāri. The running festival is considered a sporting tradition in Ropažu novads.

The programme on 1 May 2026 included 10- and 5-kilometre distances, as well as a 500-metre children’s run. There were also tourist excursions and activities at Kangaru Station and in the surrounding area. Runners could therefore choose between two longer distances and a much shorter children’s run. If you are planning to attend a future festival, check the date, programme and route for that edition.
