Olaine Municipality: Between Nature, Culture and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Olaine Municipality
Olaine Municipality invites you to explore nature, enjoy outdoor activities and discover cultural sites. Wetlands, pine forest, cycling options and local experiences each offer something different. You can tailor your trip to whether you want to be active outdoors, observe nature or explore history and culture.
Nature and Outdoor Activities
At Līdumu karjers, there are recreation areas with wooden pontoons, a walking path, picnic spots with grills and a playground. Facilities for volleyball, football and basketball are also available, along with a wake park. The services available at individual facilities may change.
A nature trail approximately 2.8 kilometres long runs around Līdumu karjers and is suitable for strollers; its surface may vary depending on the season. You can reach the area by car, bicycle, inline skates or skateboard, or on foot via the path between Olaine and Līdumu karjers.
Olaines Mežaparks encompasses a naturally growing pine forest and well-equipped surroundings in the centre of Olaine. Outdoor fitness equipment and the “Meža kaķa” trail for children add to the leisure options. From May to September, cultural events and open-air film screenings take place at the outdoor stage. Check the dates for specific events; the condition of individual pieces of equipment may also change.
The paved Olaines Velotrase is 220 metres long and designed as a loop with hills of varying heights, bends and ramps. It is integrated into an existing pine park and is considered the first paved cycling track in the Pierīga region. Together with the skatepark, it forms a complex where bicycles—mostly BMX bikes—scooters, inline skates and skateboards can be used. Check the local status of the facilities before visiting. For cycling trips, the Olaines Municipality tourist guide features three routes totalling more than 40 kilometres; check the local availability of the routes before setting out.
Thirteen protected bird species have been recorded in Melnā ezera purvs. During the autumn migration, bean geese and greater white-fronted geese stop there. The autumn migration therefore offers a specific seasonal opportunity for birdwatching, although individual sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Museum and Cultural History
The Olaine Museum of History and Art features five exhibitions, a modern exhibition hall and a publicly accessible visible storage collection. The “Laboratorija” exhibition presents the history of the four large factories: “Biolar”, “Olainfarm”, the glue factory and the plastics recycling factory. The museum also offers an interactive game with 3D features. It also provides educational activities, museum education programmes and excursions in the territory of Olaine Municipality. For specific plans, check the latest museum information.
The “Blokmāju stāsti” cultural route has nine stops featuring augmented reality elements, which you can scan using a smartphone and an app. If you want to use this digital feature, check the app’s compatibility with your smartphone in advance.
In Olaine, a 45-metre-high water tower bears the graffiti artwork “Heirēka!”. The Vidzeme-Kurzeme-Zemgale boundary posts are a state-protected cultural monument; they once marked the boundary between the Governorates of Courland and Vidzeme. In Pēternieki, the Roman Catholic Church of St Peter was completed in 1940.
Local Experiences and Getting Around
Maijrozes riding stables in Pēternieki offer stable tours and rides for children, as well as riding lessons and family celebrations. Afterward, you can organise picnics or grill sausages over a campfire. By car, you can reach the stables via the Riga–Jelgava road, turning off towards Code and then continuing for about two kilometres. “Ķiploku pasaule” in Uzvaras Līdums welcomes groups for tastings; advance booking is required. “Ooo! Sajūtu darbnīca” combines a shop with candle-making workshops.
Olaine railway station is one of three stations on the 41.6-kilometre Riga–Jelgava railway line. There are covered bicycle parking spaces and a bicycle service station next to the station. Check the timetable for your specific train journey. As a visitor’s guide, the Olaines Municipality tourist map brings together historical, nature-related, artistic and sporting attractions and helps you choose the places you want to visit.
