If you are planning a hotel stay in Medemciems, the area's history and existing routes offer two different points of reference when choosing your destination. The town developed from the settlement of the Medema bog and the peat industry; today, it also has a short walking trail in the outline of Latvia, a footpath and cycle path to Baloži, and bus and train connections to Riga. This lets you weigh up whether you would like to shape your stay more around local history, outdoor activity, or getting there. The historical traces and transport options serve different purposes: one tells the story of Medemciems's development, while the other helps with practical travel planning.

Local history: bog, houses, and peat railway

Medemciems began to develop in the mid-19th century, after tenants acquired land in the Medema bog. The first permanently inhabited houses were built in the 1890s. This gives us two tangible stages in the area's early history: the acquisition of land in the bog and the later permanent settlement. Historic 19th-century houses include ā€œAlpiā€, ā€œCÄ«ruļiā€, ā€œDūŔeļiā€, ā€œKukuļmuižniekiā€, and ā€œZanderiā€. Their names provide concrete points of reference in the area's history.

The early farmers of the Medema bog, the Baloži peat factory, and the establishment of gardening cooperatives also shaped Medemciems's development. These themes connect the history of the settlement with agriculture, the peat industry, and gardening. Peat extraction in the Medema bog began immediately after the Second World War. In the post-war period, peat narrow-gauge railways ran along Medemciems; the peat railway near Medemciems was completely dismantled in the 2000s. This sequence places the former peat infrastructure in its historical context: it belongs to the area's past, not to today's connections with Riga.

Routes and outdoor activity

The ā€œMedemciema pastaigu takaā€ is a 150-metre-long walking trail in the outline of Latvia, located in Medemciems. The outline gives the trail a clear connection to the country, while its length makes it a compact walking option to include in your plans. Medemciems also has outdoor fitness equipment. A footpath and cycle path connect the area with Baloži. If you plan to use this route, check in advance whether any temporary works may affect access.

The options differ in nature: a trail with a clearly stated length, equipment for outdoor exercise, or a connection to Baloži that you can use on foot or by bike. This gives you different ways to incorporate activity into your stay, without requiring these options to serve the same purpose.

Bus and train connections

Bus route 5173 connects Riga with Medemciems. Route 7376 runs between Riga, Jelgava, and Dobele and also stops in Medemciems. The routes therefore differ in where they go: one connects Riga and Medemciems, while the other stops in the area as part of a route that also includes Jelgava and Dobele.

Medemciems stop is also on the Jelgava railway line. Since 10 April 2026, electric trains on the Riga–Jelgava route have departed in both directions from platform 1 at the stop. Check the latest bus and train timetables before travelling.
