Bogs, Lakes and Plant Life

Teiči Nature Reserve is Latvia’s largest nature reserve; Teiči Bog is one of the largest undisturbed raised bogs in the Baltics. At Lake Lubāns, visitors can watch birds in the surrounding area; around 250 species have been observed there. Teiči and Lubāns thus offer different perspectives on bog landscapes and birdlife.

The Lubāns Wetland Complex is Latvia’s largest inland wetland area. Lubāns is also Latvia’s largest lake; boat trips are offered on the lake, including sunset cruises. The Lubāns Wetland Information Centre provides information about the Stone Age in the area around the lake. The Krustkalni Nature Reserve, located in Madona Municipality, covers 2,978 hectares, has a hilly landscape and contains 13 lakes. The Kalsnava Arboretum is home to the largest collection of woody plants in eastern Latvia. From early spring to late autumn, visitors can see 2,500 different tree species and 45,000 plant species. Smeceres sils also offers roller skiing, cross-country skiing and ski rentals. The winter facilities are seasonal.

The Aiviekstes-ozoli Trail features a Stone Age settlement with pottery vessels, as well as tools and weapons made of bone, stone, wood and flint. Visitors can try making a fire there using wood and flint. Events for active recreation, including medieval competitions, take place on the trail throughout the year; in winter, it becomes a cross-country ski trail. Boat trips on the Ogre River, along with boats and routes, are available at the Brāži Cascades.

History and Culture

The Madona Local History and Art Museum collects, preserves and displays materials relating to the history, culture and art of the town of Madona. It also features a permanent exhibition on the archaeology of the district. The doll exhibition dedicated to A. Burova’s animated films has a different focus: it offers themed tours and hands-on activities.

Cesvaine Palace is a hunting lodge in the eclectic style, combining elements of Gothic, Romanesque and Art Nouveau architecture. A large part of the palace is open to visitors, and its authentic interiors have been preserved. Visits must be arranged in advance. Varakļāni Manor houses the Varakļāni Local History Museum and offers exhibitions, guided tours and a park.

Regional Produce and Flavours

Henome grows quinces and offers tours and tastings. Lancori focuses on garlic and garlic-based seasonings; tours and tastings are also available there. Visitors can enjoy freshly smoked fish in the area around Lake Lubāns. At the “Zvejnieki” fishermen’s farm, you can also order in advance a fish soup that is part of Latgale’s culinary heritage.
