A trip to Launkalne can be shaped around nature and local history. The nature trail starts in the village; the former manor house now houses the Launkalnes Tautas nams, and a historic stone bridge is located near the center. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider whether you would prefer to focus your trip on walking trails, protected natural areas, or cultural history.

Nature Trails and Walks

The Launkalne Nature Trail starts in Launkalne and passes through forests and natural meadows. At a bend in the Rauza, the trail passes a scenic picnic spot with a table, benches, a fire pit, and a wooden shelter. The nature trail thus combines two highlights: a route through forest and meadow landscapes, and a specific picnic spot by the river bend. When planning your walk, you can include a named picnic spot along the way.

The walking routes also differ in their stated focus. The longer Launkalne loop passes through hilly terrain, where dense forests alternate with beautiful rural landscapes. An interactive version of the shorter loop is available in the Actionbound app, combining the walk with a learning game. The longer route focuses on the landscape, while the shorter loop offers a playful way to explore.

Nature Conservation and Natural Sites

The Launkalne Nature Reserve is a Natura 2000 site in Launkalnes pagasts. Silva Dendrological Park is also in Launkalnes pagasts, near the village of Silva. Silva Arboretum is a nationally protected natural area covering 15 hectares. For nature-focused planning, several details are relevant: the nature reserve’s Natura 2000 status, the park’s location near Silva, and the arboretum’s size and protected status.

Local History and Culture

Launkalne’s history is connected with a former manor house. The village developed around the center of the former Launkalna Manor, also known as Launekaln. The former Launkalne Manor now houses the Launkalnes Tautas nams. On the second floor is a common room where small exhibitions and presentations can be held. Here, the former manor’s history meets a present-day cultural function.

One of the earliest historical references to Launkalne dates to 1584 and is associated with the Catholic chapel of Kapeņkalns. Another point of interest in the area’s history is the Mūra tilts pār Ruņģu strautu: the single-span masonry stone bridge over the Ruņģu strauts was built in 1855 and fully restored in 1997. It is located close to the center of Launkalne. The two dates distinguish the construction period from the later restoration and give the bridge a clear historical timeline.

The event “Dullais Augustiņš” is also part of Launkalne’s cultural life. It has been held every August since 2013; the specific event dates may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates in advance.
