The Gauja divides the city of Valmiera into two parts; one of them is called Pārgauja. The river provides a clear point of reference for planning your trip: a 12-kilometre hiking trail, ā€œStarp četriem Valmieras tiltiem,ā€ follows the banks of the Gauja and offers a different perspective on Valmiera. There is also medieval architecture, museum history and nature trails through varied landscapes. You can shape your stay around the experiences that matter most to you.

Hiking trails and landscapes

In Skaņākalna Nature Park, a trail of approximately three kilometres one way follows the Salaca Valley. It passes sandstone cliffs, caves, springs and pine forests. At Sietiņezis, a maintained circular trail leads around the site; allow approximately 45 minutes for a visit. From there, you can enjoy a view of the Gauja Valley. The surrounding area has small caves, niches, erosion gullies and pine forests.

Sietiņezis is approximately 15 metres high and 400 metres long, and is considered the largest white sandstone outcrop in the Baltics. The Neļķu Cliffs stretch for about 300 metres along the right bank of the Salaca and reach a height of 20 metres. The type of trail can also help you choose: the Zilākalna Veselības taka is a 3.5-kilometre circular trail, while the trail in Skaņākalna Nature Park runs for approximately three kilometres one way. The observation tower on Zilākalns was officially opened in 2024.

In the wider region, Gauja National Park protects the Gauja Valley along the river between Valmiera and Murjani.

Medieval architecture and museums

St. Simon’s Church in Valmiera is one of Latvia’s most significant medieval monuments of sacred architecture. Its tower houses an exhibition space and an observation platform with views of Valmiera. Architecture, an exhibition and a view of the city come together in one place.

The Valmiera Museum of Regional History and Art is located in a complex of eight buildings within the ruins of the Livonian Order’s castle. The museum offers guided tours, lectures and a range of educational programmes. The Old Pharmacy stands on Bruņinieku Street: it is the oldest wooden building in Valmiera and the second-oldest pharmacy in Latvia.

River activities and seasonal experiences

In summer, guided trips on the ā€œGaujas tramvajsā€ depart from the boat landing in Valmiera. The Gauja is seasonally navigable for approximately 85 kilometres from Valmiera to its mouth at the sea; this route is scheduled to take three days. If you plan to take a boat trip, bear in mind that it operates seasonally.

A 25-kilometre canoe route on the Gauja is considered suitable for beginners, experienced paddlers and families with children. Water levels and conditions vary by season. Sajūtu Park has a barefoot trail more than two kilometres long and a 200-square-metre net maze. On a visit to Valmiermuiža Craft Brewery, you can learn how naturally brewed beer is made and sample it in the style of the manor lords.

Choose a hotel for your stay

The trails mentioned vary in length and type; river activities depend on the season and conditions. Then choose a hotel location to suit your own plans.
