Limbaži Municipality: Culture, Coast and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Limbaži Municipality
At Lielezers in Limbaži, there is an artistically designed environmental feature called “Bebrs”. Improvements for people with visual impairments reported on June 26, 2026, include a tactile map of the beach and nature trail, as well as an audio story. This combination of natural surroundings and engaging interpretation makes it one of the distinctive places to visit in Limbaži Municipality.
Nature and trails
Limbaži Lielezers is 4.3 kilometres long and up to 6.5 metres deep. The 2.3-kilometre nature trail is a developed path that connects the town beach and boat base with a birdwatching tower. In places, a wooden boardwalk runs through reed beds; from the tower, you can look out over the lake. The figures describe different points of reference: the lake’s measurements indicate the size of the body of water, while the trail describes a specific route with named endpoints.
The Niedrāji-Pilka Bog Nature Trail follows a different route: the one-kilometre loop ends at an observation platform about three metres high. Niedrāji-Pilka Bog is an important resting and nesting site for cranes, herring gulls and black-legged kittiwakes. With a little luck, you may also spot black storks, bean geese, honey buzzards, lesser spotted eagles, black grouse, hazel grouse, golden plovers and three-toed woodpeckers. The bog trail therefore combines a short circuit with a glimpse into the habitat of various bird species; sightings, however, are a matter of luck.
Limbaži Municipality is one of the three administrative areas of the Ziemeļvidzeme Biosphere Reserve. On the Vidzeme coast between Ainaži and Kuiviži lies the Randu pļavas Nature Reserve. The Vidzeme Coastal Hiking Route also passes through varied landscapes featuring high sand dunes, sandstone cliffs, stony beaches and distinctive Randu, or coastal, meadows. The coastal route and the trails by Lielezers or in the bog offer different perspectives on nature, but should not be considered part of a single route.
Another option for getting active is the seven-kilometre Greenway “Limbaži–Katvari”, which follows the route of a former railway line. It is suitable for cycling, hiking and cross-country skiing; check the surface conditions before setting out. The suitability of these activities may vary depending on conditions.
Museums and cultural history
In Limbaži, the exhibition rooms and history exhibition of the Limbaži Museum are housed in the New Castle of the Riga City Council, at Burtnieku iela 7. Built in the early 19th century, the building formerly served as the manor administration building of Pilsmuiža. Exhibition topics range from “Baumaņu Kārlis and His Time”—about the author of the Latvian national anthem—to the permanent exhibition “Perpetuum mobiles”.
The cultural and educational centre “Melngaiļa sēta” has permanent exhibitions dedicated to the life and work of Emīls Melngailis. The Bārda Family Memorial Museum “Rumbiņi” preserves the memory of the poets Fricis, Paulīna and Antons Bārda, who made significant contributions to Latvian culture. The museum includes preserved farm buildings dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. The focus is therefore on both the poets’ lives and the historic buildings.
In Staicele, the Lībiešu muzejs Pivālind is housed in one of the town’s oldest log houses, built in 1870. The museum offers insights into Livonian history and traditions, local place names and their connection to the Livonian language. Exhibits include household items from the Staicele area, tools, musical instruments and paintings by local landscape artists.
In Ainaži, two museums tell different sides of the town’s history. The Ainažu jūrskolas muzejs provides information about the first Latvian-Estonian maritime school, its work, achievements and significance. The Ainažu Ugunsdzēsības muzejs presents the town’s history in its permanent exhibition “Spožas pogas, ķiveres” and features exhibits from the collection of the Latvian Firefighting Museum. Visitors can also arrange to visit the volunteer fire brigade’s depot.
The Pāles novadpētniecības muzejs documents and presents the cultural and historical heritage of Pāle parish. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement and can take place on the day and at the time you prefer. If you plan to make the visit a fixed part of your itinerary, be sure to allow for the required advance booking.
Crafts and seasonal experiences
On the Vidzeme coast, the black pottery workshop “Cepļi” has been open since 1985. Visitors can learn about the ceramic-making process. The Svētupes manor complex is open seasonally from June to September, offering cultural, art, sports and motorsport events, as well as guided tours. Since dates and programmes may change, it is worth checking specific event details before planning a visit.
At “Ceplīši” in Stiene village, homemade Gogelmogels plombir ice cream is made using a classic recipe with pure natural ingredients and no additives. Visitors can also learn about chicken farming and sample ice cream while hearing about its history. If you plan to include these experiences as a fixed part of your itinerary, it is advisable to confirm them in advance.
