Ķirbiži brings together nature and forestry with a multifaceted manor history. The Ķirbižu Forest Educational Trail and the Ķirbižu Forest Museum offer different ways to explore the area; Ķirbižu Manor adds a historical dimension.

Circular Trail and Nature along the Vitrupe

The 2.1 km Ķirbižu Forest Educational Trail forms a loop along both banks of the Vitrupe. The river thus shapes the route. Along the trail, you can see the Vālodzes Oak. The tree stands on the bank of the Vitrupe and has a trunk circumference of 6.52 m. Nature enthusiasts can explore both a clearly defined circular route and a specific, named tree as points of interest.

Protected Landscape and Valley

Ķirbižu Manor is located in the settlement of Ķirbiži, within the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve's protected landscape area. A section of Vitrupes ieleja has been designated a locally protected natural feature: it extends from below Ķirbižu Manor to the parish boundary. In the lower reaches of the Vitrupe, in the Vitrupes ieleja area, there are small sandstone outcrops and numerous rare plant and mollusc species. Alongside the circular trail, the highlights include a protected section of valley and specific geological and biological features.

The Ķirbižu Forest Museum

The Ķirbižu Forest Museum is located in Ķirbiži and has been housed since 1989 in the barn and grain-drying kiln of the Ķirbiži manor complex. Its extensive exhibition explores the development of Latvian forestry. It also features exhibits on local fauna and flora, the history of forest formation, forestry and timber harvesting, as well as hunting trophies. The subject matter ranges from nature and forest development to human use of the forest. If you are interested in the history of forestry, this focus complements the trail's connection with nature with a cultural and historical perspective.

Manor History and Historical Connections

The history of the postal service is also part of Ķirbiži's historical connections: in 1643, the village was one of six horse-changing points on the postal route from Riga to Estonia. Ķirbižu Manor was built for the von Aderkas family at the end of the 18th century and remodeled at the end of the 19th century. From 1856 to 1858, Baumaņu Kārlis worked there as a tutor; he wrote the Latvian national anthem, “Dievs, svētī Latviju”. The manor is privately owned and cannot be visited by the public.

More Features of the Trail Landscape

On the bank of the Vitrupe is “Vīna pagrabiņš”, a stone-built resting terrace belonging to the Baron of Ķirbiži. The group of pine trees “Intīmstūrītis” is another named feature of the landscape. It is described as an ecological feature and is stated to be 159 years old. Together with the Vālodzes Oak, these specific names offer different points of reference for exploring nature and the trail.

If you are considering Ķirbiži for a hotel stay, you can weigh the nature trail and protected valley as nature-focused attractions against the museum and manor themes. This can help you decide whether you are more interested in the landscape and trail or in forestry and manor history.
