Limbaži brings together city history, crafts and nature: medieval castle ruins, themed exhibitions and a nature trail at Limbažu Lielezers each offer a different focus. When choosing where to stay, you can decide whether to centre your visit on historical themes, hands-on craft activities or the lake.

City history and exhibitions

The “Limbažu viduslaiku pilsdrupas” are considered one of Latvia’s oldest fortifications. They offer a medieval point of reference. The “Vecais ugunsdzēsēju depo” presents a different aspect of the city’s history: it houses an exhibition on the history of the Limbaži Volunteer Fire Brigade. A narrow staircase and glass floors lead to the top of the depot tower; from the fifth-floor windows, visitors can look out over the central part of Limbaži’s Old Town. Check in advance whether the tower and exhibition are currently open to visitors.

“PERPETUUM MOBILES” offers a historically specific perspective. The exhibition explores the development of Limbaži as a district centre from the 13th to the 15th century. It is set up in three halls on the first floor of the main building of Pilsmuiža in Limbaži, and invites visitors to engage actively in exploring the past. This puts the city’s historical role centre stage, while the castle ruins focus on a specific fortification.

Crafts to watch and try

“Filcītis” presents a historical account of the former “Limbažu Filcs” factory. An exhibition on the factory’s history also includes a felt workshop where visitors can try making felt souvenirs. At “Limbažu tīne”, by contrast, the focus is on observing: visitors can watch wool being processed using historical equipment. The two craft experiences are therefore quite different: at the felt workshop, you can try it yourself; at “Limbažu tīne”, you can watch wool being processed. Check in advance whether the felt workshop and visits to “Limbažu tīne” are available when you plan to visit.

At “Sudraba Limbaži”, a guided tour explores Limbaži’s connection with silver; the programme also includes soldering demonstrations. Visitors can learn brass- and silverworking skills in the workshop, and master classes are also offered. If you plan to take part in these activities, check the dates and programme details again before your trip. The experience combines a themed tour with practical insights into metalworking.

Nature at Lielezers and getting around town

At Limbažu Lielezers, a 2.3-kilometre nature trail runs as a one-way route from the town beach and boat base to a birdwatching tower. Sections with wooden boardwalks pass through reed beds; from the tower, you can look out over the lake. When planning your visit, take both the one-way route and the stated distance into account. This makes it easy to include the trail as a nature-focused activity during your stay, distinct from the exhibitions and craft experiences.

For an insight into the local creative scene, visit the “Radīts Limbažu novadā” shop in central Limbaži. It brings together work by more than 100 producers, home-based producers, craftspeople and creatives from Limbažu novads. Vienības Park lies between Rīgas iela and Parka iela.
