Vidriži: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Vidriži
Vidriži brings together cultural history, nature and manor landscapes. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Vidriži, your interests can shape the focus of your stay: the permanent exhibitions explore biographies and the history of Vidrižu pagasts; the preserved manor house provides an architectural landmark. Nature-related themes range from bird stopovers and breeding grounds to medicinal plants. Nearby Bīriņi adds paths and manor parks to the picture.
Culture and history
The permanent exhibitions at “Melngaiļa sēta” cover Emīlis Melngailis; the writer and educator Leons Paegle; the poets Austra and Rūta Skujiņa; and Hugo Legzdiņš, a submarine commander and recipient of the Order of the Three Stars. They also cover the history of Vidrižu pagasts and its schools. The permanent exhibitions thus connect individual biographies with the history of the pagasts and its schools.
The preserved manor house of Vidriži Manor was built in the 1870s and 1880s. As an architectural landmark, it offers a different focus from the permanent exhibitions: the exhibitions centre on people and regional history, while the manor house highlights the period when a manor house was built. When choosing a cultural theme, you can therefore distinguish between biographies, school history and a preserved building from the late 19th century.
Nature and manor landscapes
Part of the Laugas purvs nature reserve, established in 1999, lies in Vidrižu pagasts. The area is an important stopover for migrating geese and cranes, and serves as a breeding ground for various wetland birds. These two functions distinguish between stopovers during bird migration and the breeding activity of various wetland birds.
The nature trail named after Emīlis Melngailis passes through his birthplace. Jānis Ulmis’ open-air medicinal plant exhibition features more than 300 plant species. The two have different thematic focuses: the trail connects nature with Melngailis’ life story, while the exhibition focuses on medicinal plants.
Bīriņi is located near Vidriži, within Vidrižu pagasts. The walking trails of Bīriņi Castle run through and around the two manor parks, Priežkalns and Mežaparks. Together, the parks form a unified manor estate protected under national protection number 6455. Bīriņi Castle, by the lake, has a terraced section of a formal park; one of the manor parks features several rare tree species. The park landscape thus brings together the design of the formal park and the distinctive tree species of the manor park as different points of interest.
Events
Bird waking is traditionally celebrated at Zaļais Kalniņš. An announcement dated 11 March 2026 announced that bird waking there would take place on 22 March 2026; the event was due to be held for the fourth time. Vidriži also hosts competitions featuring Latvian and Baltic Enduro riders. Event themes thus range from local traditions to Enduro sport.
