Thisted Municipality: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Thisted Municipality
In Thisted Municipality, travel experiences range from dune landscapes and hiking trails to museums and surf spots. In the western part of Thy, centuries of drifting sand have shaped the coast, dunes, dune heaths, lakes and dune plantations. The landscape’s history also stretches far back: around 7,000 years ago, much of what is now the municipality was covered by the Littorina Sea.
Dune landscapes and viewpoints
Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve is Denmark’s largest wildlife reserve and includes Europe’s largest dune heath. At 56 metres above sea level, Isbjerg is the highest point in the reserve. The bird tower in Sårup offers a different view of the area: it stands high on an old coastal cliff in the northwestern part of Tved Dune Plantation and provides a particularly good view over the reserve’s inner, enclosed areas.
Agger Tange also combines nature conservation with wildlife watching. The area is designated as an EU Special Protection Area for birds; seals can often be spotted from its southern tip. Those interested in birdlife and marine mammals will find a direct connection with nature here, while Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve is best explored for its dune heath and the view from the bird tower.
Hiking trails, cycling routes and surf spots
Thy National Park has 49 marked hiking trails. One hiking route starts at the ferry terminal on Agger Tange, runs through the national park to Hanstholm and continues to Bulbjerg. When planning this route, take seasonal water conditions into account, as they may affect some sections. For longer cycling trips, the Vestkystruten, which is identical to National Cycle Route 1, starts at Agger ferry terminal and runs north for more than 100 kilometres, passing Bulbjerg.
The mountain bike trail in Vilsbøl Plantation is 7 kilometres long and graded easy. Additional loops are 1.9 kilometres and graded intermediate, and 1 kilometre and graded difficult. For a horse ride, the marked Rideruten Thy extends for up to 100 kilometres, from the southernmost part of the national park near Lodbjerg to the northernmost part of the municipality near Bulbjerg. The information clearly distinguishes between an easy mountain bike trail, additional sections with specified difficulty levels, and a marked riding route spanning a large north–south area.
Watersports are also part of what the region has to offer: Cold Hawaii in Thy includes 31 registered surf spots along the west coast, from Agger Tange in the south to just north of Hanstholm. In Klitmøller, surf schools and camps offer visitors the chance to try surfing. If you plan to take part, check availability with the providers before your trip.
Museums and culture in Thy
Thisted Museum has seven permanent exhibitions on the long history of Thy. Its modern archaeological exhibition covers, among other things, mining in the Stone Age and Iron Age farmers. It also features the Kallerup find, a Bronze Age discovery that attracted international attention in 2019. The museum thus brings together different periods, from early economies and agriculture to a find from the Bronze Age.
Hanstholm Bunker Museum tells the story of the Second World War, the German fortifications, and the people and weapons associated with the bunkers of the Atlantic Wall. In summer, you can ride the old ammunition train through some of the large bunkers. Check the specific departure dates when planning your visit. The Thy National Park Centre offers a different way to get your bearings: its 300-square-metre interpretation space features a landscape model that gives an overview of the character of the national park, its trails, towns, experiences and stories.
Christiansgave has an open-air theatre with seating for 300 people, as well as a lawn area for 1,000 seated spectators. The park also has a fully equipped nature workshop for around 25 people and a playground with carved wooden figures. In Stenbjerg, Stenbjerg Landing Place reflects the area’s coastal fishing heritage: it is known as a landing place for coastal fishermen, and the buildings there date from around 1900.
Getting around and planning your trip
Thisted Municipality can be reached by bus, train and ferry, and there are public transport connections within the municipality too. If the nearest bus stop is too far away, you can book Flextur or Plustur. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide on your priorities first—such as hiking, cycling, surfing or visiting museums—and consider the relevant transport connections. There are public toilets at the National Park Centre, open almost around the clock throughout the year; check their current status before your visit.
