Krik on the Limfjord can be explored through several facets: water sports in Krik Vig, a fjord landscape shaped by sand, and the history of the town as a loading place. When planning your trip, you can consider these topics separately: activities on the water, routes through the surrounding area and historical context offer different starting points for a stay.

Water sports in Krik Vig

In suitable wind conditions, Krik Vig is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers. You can also canoe and kayak on the Limfjord at Krik Vig. There is a ramp in Krik Vig where boats can be launched. When paddling or surfing on the Limfjord at Krik Vig and Agger Tange, keep a safe distance from the coast and the bird island.

Fjord landscape and bird areas

Krik Vig, east of Agger Tange, is the only marine area in Thy National Park. The protected area of Agger Tange also includes adjacent parts of Krik Vig, which serve as resting, feeding and breeding grounds for waterbirds. The shallow areas of Krik Vig are also used by resting waterbirds. The landscape thus combines shallow waters with the area's particular importance for birds.

Apart from a narrow natural navigation channel along the coast of Thy, Krik Vig consists of a shallow sandbank. It was formed by storm erosion, which transported sand from the North Sea into Nissum Bredning, particularly after the storm surge of 1825. Krik Vig Vest comprises the part of Krik Vig that lies within Thy National Park and corresponds to the eastern part of the Agger Tange wildlife reserve.

Routes and waters in South Thy

The paddling trip on the Hvidbjerg Vesten Å is 40 km long and runs from Sjørring to Krik. The “Around Flade Sø” route is about 10 km long, making it considerably shorter than the paddling trip. In South Thy, the Hvidbjerg Vesten Å also connects the large lakes Nørhå Sø, Ove Sø and Ørum Sø. These details distinguish a specific paddling route from a shorter route around Flade Sø.

Krik as a historic loading place

Krik was one of the four old loading places in South Thy. In the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, the so-called Krejler, the Limfjord's barge operators, used Krik to transship goods. They loaded grain there for merchants from Thisted and Aalborg and unloaded timber and hardware. The history of the town is therefore also linked to the transport of goods across the Limfjord.

A railway siding led to the loading place at the end of Krik Vig. Cement and stone were unloaded there from cargo ships and transported to Agger. Together with the history of the Krejler, these activities show the role the loading place played in the transport of goods in South Thy.
