Klitmøller: Coast, Nature and Maritime History
Accommodation in Klitmøller
Klitmøller offers a sandy beach on the North Sea, dunes, much of which are protected, opportunities for outdoor activities and visible traces of the town’s history. If you’re looking for hotels in Klitmøller, first consider whether you’d like to focus your trip mainly on the beach, trails and nature, or maritime and architectural heritage. The town’s features offer several specific starting points for your plans.
Beach, Surfing and Event Dates
Klitmøller’s beach is a sandy beach on the North Sea and is suitable for recreational fishing and surfing. Klitmøller has hosted the Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup since 2010. If you’d like to plan your trip around this event, check the latest event dates in advance.
Hiking, Kayaking and the Vandet Sø Route
There are opportunities for hiking in Thy National Park from Klitmøller, and kayaking is possible in the surrounding area. The Vandet Sø Route starts in Klitmøller and goes around Vandet Sø. This gives you three distinct options for planning: hiking in the national park, kayaking in the surrounding area and a route that starts in Klitmøller and circles the lake.
Dunes and Viewing Platform
Much of Klitmøller’s dunes are protected. Use the designated paths there: walking off the paths can damage plants and measures to combat sand drift. Follow current local guidance and restrictions. The paths are therefore a practical part of your visit to the natural area.
A ramp leads from Klitmøller’s promenade to the Hummerhuset viewing platform. Hummerhuset offers views of the sea and town; there is a toilet in the platform area. If you plan to visit the viewpoint, check the condition of the facilities on site.
Maritime History and Townscape
At Ørhage, you can see equipment sheds, an auction house and a rescue station. Many of Klitmøller’s old houses were built during the heyday of the lighter trade and are well preserved. Møllegården still stands and recalls Klitmøller’s former main activity: milling grain from farms inland and then transporting it by ship to Norway.
The restored coastal boat T 97 “Bellis” offers a glimpse of the instruments and equipment available to fishermen in the 1950s and 1960s. If you plan to visit the boat, check access in advance.
Klitmøller Church
Klitmøller Church was built in 1872. It acquired its present-day appearance, with brown brick, during an extensive restoration in 1966–67. The altarpiece was painted by Queen Louise, wife of Christian IX. The church thus brings together its construction date, a later restoration and a specific work of art: different starting points for exploring the town’s architectural and religious history.
