Stenbjerg: Paths through dunes and coastal history
Accommodation in Stenbjerg
Stenbjerg combines paths through the dunes with a rich coastal and cultural history. The town lies in the heart of Thy National Park, surrounded by sea, dunes, dune heath, and Stenbjerg Klitplantage. Both short and longer routes, as well as several historic sites, offer practical points of reference when planning a stay.
Dune landscape and nature
Stenbjerg Klithede has been designated a Natura 2000 site and is part of a 680-hectare protected dune landscape on the west coast of Thy. This heath is a very rare type of natural habitat in Europe. Characteristic heathland plants, as well as breeding cranes and dunlins, find habitat here. The landscape therefore offers a distinct focus alongside the town’s buildings and paths.
The different routes take you through a variety of landscapes. The Embak Tour leads through varied, hilly woodland to the Bislet and Embak Vand wetlands. If you are looking for a shorter designated hiking route, Stenbjerg Vest offers a marked 1.2-kilometre trail that starts at a car park on Stenbjergvej. Check route conditions before setting out.
Compare hiking trails
Stenbjerg Kultursti is a 6.2-kilometre circular route. It starts at Stenbjerg Landingsplads and leads from there through the dunes to Stenbjerg, then back via Stenbjerg Båke and the beach. The route links the landing site with the dunes, the town, and the coastal marker in one loop.
At 3.5 kilometres, the Gravshøjs Tour is shorter. It follows an old coastal cliff dating from the Stone Age and passes several Bronze Age burial mounds. The yellow-marked Embak Tour is 5.7 kilometres long and links woodland with the wetlands mentioned above. Together with the 1.2-kilometre Stenbjerg Vest, these routes range from a short trail to the longest circular route described here. Length and landscape are practical points of comparison when planning your day; no walking times are provided for the routes.
The landing site and local history
Small equipment sheds stand at Stenbjerg Landingsplads. Local fishermen built them around 1900. They were not homes, but are a reminder of the time when fishermen earned their living by making dangerous trips into the North Sea to fish. At Stenbjergdag, fresh, locally caught fish is served by the old houses beside the water.
Stenbjerg Redningshus was built of red bricks in 1931 and is a listed building. Stenbjerg Redningsmuseum includes, among other things, a rescue boat dating from 1892. Stenbjerg Båke is a historic sea marker from a system of 23 markers built along the Jutland west coast in 1884–85. Together, these named sites tell the story of coastal marking and sea rescue. Stenbjerg Kirke was built in 1895. In the dunes near Stenbjerg Kirkevej, there is also a German observation bunker from the Second World War; information about the war and the Atlantic Wall is available there.
Art history is also part of Stenbjerg’s cultural character: Käte Lassens Hus and the black shed to the west tell the story of the artists who stayed in Stenbjerg and used people and nature as their subjects. The town thus combines nature trails with different ways of exploring history—from traces of prehistoric landscapes to art.
