If you are looking for a hotel in Ydby, you can plan your trip around the mix of outdoor activities, scenery, and culture you want. On Ydby Hede, Bronze Age burial mounds, walks towards the Limfjord, and views of Skibsted Fjord come together; there are also several named routes to choose from. Ydby Church adds Romanesque architecture to these attractions. You can tailor your trip to the places and route features that interest you most.

Ydby Hede: burial mounds and fjord views

On Ydby Hede, visitors can walk among the burial mounds towards the Limfjord. The Oldtidskirkegården on the heath includes a total of 49 Bronze Age burial mounds and is Denmark’s largest group of its kind. Ydby Hede also offers views of Skibsted Fjord. A land-use plan from the Danish Nature Agency dated 12 October 2023 places the two eastern extensions of Ydby Hede within Natura 2000 site No. 23, “Agger Tange, Nissum Bredning, Skibsted Fjord and Agerø.” The burial mounds, walking opportunities, and fjord views give the heath a range of cultural and scenic connections.

Hiking routes with different points of interest

The Dover-Skov route starts at the car park by the entrance to Ydby Skov, where Ydbyvej meets Oddesundvej. It passes the Cirkus Miehe Mausoleum, which lies in an ancient burial mound. This route therefore has both a named starting point and a historic point of interest.

On the Flarup route, a detour along Siagervej leads into Ydby Skov. The route also offers views across fields and of Nissum Bredning in the distance. The woodland detour and open landscape views provide a different focus from the mausoleum on the Dover-Skov route.

The Sønder-Ydby route runs along Trankær Hole. It also offers the option of following a marked route of approximately 800 m around the Nordic Center for Renewable Energy. The approximate length gives a general idea of this marked route. Comparing the three routes reveals their different features: the starting point and mausoleum on the Dover-Skov route, the woodland and distant views on the Flarup route, and Trankær Hole and the marked trail on the Sønder-Ydby route.

Romanesque architecture in Ydby

Ydby Church offers a distinct cultural and historical attraction. Its chancel and nave were built from granite ashlars during the Romanesque period. Alongside the Bronze Age burial mounds, the church represents a different period and architectural aspect of Ydby’s cultural heritage. Granite ashlars are square-cut blocks of granite; “Romanesque” identifies the period in which the church was built. The building therefore clearly illustrates both its material and its era.
