Centuries-old oak trees, medieval castle architecture and museums about regional history give Skive Municipality its varied character. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you could start by considering whether nature trails, cultural history or special activities will shape your stay.

Nature areas and trails

The municipality has 500 hectares of municipal forests and nature areas. South of Skive, Skive Plantage covers 300 hectares within the municipality. Centuries-old oak trees grow in Krabbesholm Skov in Skive. The Flyndersø and Sønder Lem Vig nature parks cover a combined 3,900 hectares of diverse nature and numerous marked hiking trails.

For orientation, the municipality’s hiking trail map shows trails as well as car parks, birdwatching towers and shelters. The nature parks also have parking, simple overnight sites, picnic areas and service buildings. Shelters are spread throughout the municipality, with most options in Salling. Five municipal shelters can be reserved in advance. This lets you distinguish between marked trails, places to take a break and simple overnight sites when planning.

Castles, lakes and museum visits

Spøttrup Borg is one of Denmark’s best-preserved medieval castles. It was completed by the mid-1520s at the latest; Bishop Jørgen Friis finished its construction. Visitors can explore the castle complex, including its moats, tower and knights’ hall. Year-round offerings include events, guided tours, markets and historical living-history activities. At Spøttrup Sø, you can find a rich variety of wildlife and birdlife; a path runs around the lake, and a birdwatching tower offers a chance to experience nature at close hand.

Skive Art Museum opens two special exhibitions each year. Its permanent exhibition, “Samling om Natur,” features exclusively works from the museum’s own collection. The museum also houses Billedskolen, which offers activities for children and adults. The children’s and family exhibition “Kunstbyen” invites visitors to get creative and learn about colours and shapes. Træmuseet displays machines and tools made in Denmark. It is considered the only museum of its kind in the country and promotes understanding of traditional woodworking.

Glyngøre Kulturstation is housed in former railway station buildings and focuses on local history and the fjord’s influence on the people around Glyngøre. Its themes range from railways and fishing to industry and cultural life. In summer, shellfish safaris are offered at the beach. You can also buy a beach kit there with equipment for catching crabs yourself. As the safaris are seasonal, check the current programme before your visit.

Literature and history outdoors

Jenle is the historic artist’s home of the poet Jeppe Aakjær, where some of his best-known works were written. The museum features permanent and changing exhibitions, as well as two small cinemas about Jeppe and Nanna Aakjær. Jenle hosts the annual Jenlefesten. The nature grounds are open to visitors all year, except during the festival; the outdoor areas, including Aakjær’s grave, can be visited free of charge. Aakjær’s Poet’s Route winds through the landscape, connecting nature with the poet’s words and stories.

Ørslev Kloster also offers a way to explore history: its origins date back to the second half of the 12th century. The protected garden and woodland around the monastery are open to the public. The old gardener’s house contains an exhibition about the monastery’s history. Here, nature and monastic history offer distinct themes to explore.

Activities and local produce

Numerous paths cross the grounds of VÌksthus Spøttrup. To the north, they connect the site with Spøttrup Borg; to the west, with Spøttrup Sø. Other links lead to the former railway line and east to Vestsallingstien. VÌksthus Spøttrup offers group tours and courses in cider-making and bread-baking.

Pometet in Spøttrup has a large collection of old Danish apple varieties. The grounds are open to visitors all year; volunteers are there on Monday mornings to explain the collection. Activities include pruning and grafting courses, cider workshops, pressing days and an autumn cider competition. The different dates and themes may also be of interest when planning your trip.

At VisionKayak in Skive, you can paddle in fully transparent kayaks. Offerings include morning, sunset and full-moon tours; availability may vary. The spot near Glyngøre appeals to experienced surfers, as the wind can become very strong there. Conditions depend on the wind and weather. These differences can help you choose between a scheduled tour and an activity whose conditions depend on the weather.
