Rønbjerg: Hiking, Flyndersø and Church Art
Accommodation in Rønbjerg
Rønbjerg brings together distinctive nature and cultural experiences: hiking trails run through the plantation and along Flyndersø, while Rønbjerg Church, with a pictorial frieze and late Gothic paintings, provides a historical focal point. If you’re looking for a hotel in Rønbjerg, the local details below can help you weigh nature trails, landscape and cultural history as possible focuses for your trip.
Hiking in the Plantation and by Flyndersø
Rønbjerg Plantation lies in Flyndersø–Sønder Lem Vig Nature Park. Nearby is Flyndersø, a large glacial lake between heathland and plantation. You can reach it on foot from Rønbjerg and Estvad in just a few minutes. This brings the forest and the lakeside landscape into focus as different aspects of the area.
The red hiking route “Rønbjerg - Flyndersø” runs from Rønbjerg along Stationsvejen and Præstevejen through the forest. It then follows paths along Flyndersø. The section by the lake may be affected in wet conditions; bear this in mind when planning your trip.
The yellow hiking route “Rønbjerg - Flyndersø” runs through forest and sunken lanes to Flyndersø. On the return, it follows the lake for about a mile to Rønbjerg. Seasonal grazing should also be taken into account on this route. The two descriptions differ mainly in how they depict the way to the lake and the return along the water.
Public Shelter Site in the Plantation
There is a public shelter site in Rønbjerg Plantation at Gl. Rønbjerg. You can reach it from Præstevejen by car, on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The site has a shelter, picnic tables, a covered shelter with a fire pit, a resting pasture for horses, a hitching rail for horses and a dry toilet. The access options and facilities listed here provide practical guidance if you’re considering including this site in your plans. Facilities and access rules may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
Rønbjerg Church and Its Art
Rønbjerg Church stands west of Rønbjerg on an isolated moraine ridge, surrounded by a sandur plain. The north wall of the nave features late Gothic wall paintings, created around 1500–1525 by the Ejsing workshop. Another historical focal point is the nearly ten-metre-long pictorial frieze from 1522.
The pictorial frieze depicts seven scenes from the Passion of Jesus: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Kiss of Judas, Jesus brought before Pilate, the Flagellation, the Crowning with Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross and the Crucifixion. The sequence thus runs from the Garden of Gethsemane to the Crucifixion. The wall paintings and pictorial frieze represent different forms of church art; together, they offer a glimpse of the church’s traditional furnishings.
Rønbjerg Heath and Other Traces
A well-preserved ring fort lies on Rønbjerg Heath, in the area around Rønbjerg. It may have served as a cattle or sheep pen, though this is only one possible interpretation. From the highest point on the heath, the view stretches across Flyndersø and Hjelm Hede. The ring fort and viewpoint thus offer different points of interest if you’re curious about the landscape and its earlier uses.
Flyndersø Mill is also nearby, close to the lake. It bears witness to the former use of the forces of nature. The “Den Røde Ring” activity area in Rønbjerg was inaugurated in 2015. Together with the hiking routes and historical sites described above, these details add to the picture of the area, although they don’t all represent the same kind of outing or stay.
