Vile: Church, Coastal Trail and Hotels
Accommodation in Vile
Vile can be explored through several specific points of interest: the Romanesque Vile Church, prehistoric burial mounds and the Følvig Beach–Sesterodde route. This route starts at the church and follows Følvigvej to Følvig Beach. The connection between the church’s location and the route is therefore clearly defined; the burial mounds and geological features at Følvig and Sesterodde offer further points of interest for planning your trip.
Vile Church and Prehistoric Traces
Vile Church consists of a Romanesque chancel and nave, built from granite ashlars. The terms refer to different parts of the building: the chancel is the altar area, and the nave is the main space of the church. Describing both parts as built from granite ashlars connects the layout of the building with its construction material. For travellers interested in church architecture, both its Romanesque classification and its stone construction are specific features of the building.
Vile Church and its churchyard lie between two prehistoric burial mounds. Some call this place “Little Jelling”. There is also a burial mound near Vile Church that Skive Museum investigated in 1983. Three urns containing cremated bones were found there, dating to the Late Bronze Age, approximately around 1000 BC. The two dates serve different purposes: 1983 refers to the investigation, while around 1000 BC is the approximate date of the finds.
The Route to Følvig Beach
The Følvig Beach–Sesterodde route starts at Vile Church, follows Følvigvej to Følvig Beach and is marked with red arrows. This identifies both a specific starting point and the route markers. If you are interested in this route, you can take its course and markings into account when planning.
The coastal section can be difficult to pass when the fjord’s water level is high. So take the water level into account when planning if you intend to follow the route. There are no parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of the route; bear this in mind when travelling there, and do not plan on parking directly by the trail.
A municipal route brochure from 2023 mentions tables and benches at Følvig where visitors can rest and eat the food they have brought with them. This adds a specific rest stop to the route description: if you are planning a break with your own food, Følvig is a named place for this.
Geological Features at Følvig and Sesterodde
Fossils dating back 60 million years can be found in the cliffs at Følvig. This is a geological point of interest in its own right, in addition to the archaeological history at Vile Church. At the cliffs of Sesterodde, by contrast, the focus is on the material: they consist of a very black type of clay called Brandenler or Glimmerler. So at Følvig the interest is in possible fossil finds, while at Sesterodde it is the name of the cliff material—two different perspectives on the geology of the area.
