Selde: Art Trail, Church and Cultural History
Accommodation in Selde
When visiting Selde, you can explore art, landscape and church history as distinct points of interest. The Selde Lake and Art Route connects the lake with Skulpturlandsby Selde; Selde Church offers a different focus with its architectural history and furnishings. There is also a local art history and an annual exhibition tradition. If you are looking for a hotel in Selde, these themes can help you plan your days around your personal interests.
Artworks along the Selde Lake and Art Route
The Selde Lake and Art Route is 3.7 km long and marked with red signs. It leads from the lake into Skulpturlandsby Selde and past numerous distinctive and thought-provoking works of art. Its length gives you a practical point of reference for planning your day; how long you spend at individual works is up to you. This lets you focus your visit on the art along the route without losing sight of the landscape.
A car park is listed for the walk, which is useful when planning your journey. At Rimmervej, the route passes a birdwatching tower. Alongside the artworks, birdwatching and the view are therefore among the route’s specific points of interest.
Landscape and birdwatching
From the birdwatching tower along the route, the view extends over the Natura 2000 area near Selde Vig, Fursund and Fur. This view shifts the focus from individual artworks to the named landscapes and gives the route a clear connection to nature. In the area around Selde, there is a birdwatching tower and a walking trail at Selde Vig. If you plan to use these facilities, check their condition locally. This allows you to treat exploring the landscape and seeing the artworks along the route as distinct points of interest on your trip.
Selde Church: architectural history and furnishings
Selde Church is the northernmost church in Salling and was built mainly in the Romanesque period. During its modernisation in 2007, a new altar area was created by local artist Erik Heide. One of the baptismal fonts bears a runic inscription that includes the name Gudliv. The contrast between the church’s predominantly Romanesque origins and the altar area created in 2007 highlights its different historical layers. The baptismal font adds a specific detail about the furnishings to this architectural and artistic history.
Selde Church is located on a road. If you plan to visit the interior, please check visiting arrangements in advance.
Art history and exhibitions
Local art history offers another perspective on Selde. The Expressionist painter Emilie Demant Hatt (1873–1958) was born here. Since 2013, art exhibitions featuring well-known artists from across the country have been held in Selde every year. Together with the artworks in Skulpturlandsby, this represents a tradition linked both to an artist born in Selde and to recurring exhibitions. If you would like to visit a particular exhibition, check the dates for your travel period. This lets you choose your own focus when planning your trip, between the art trail, church history and exhibitions.
