Harre at Harre Vig: Viking heritage and walking routes
Accommodation in Harre
Harre at Harre Vig
Harre is located on Harre Vig. The beach, walking, archaeological traces from the Viking Age, churches and golf offer different reasons to include the area in your travel plans. Depending on whether you prioritise a stay by the water, historic buildings or a round of golf, different aspects will come to the fore.
Beach and walking routes
Two walking routes start at Harre Vig Beach. The beach has a bathing jetty, tables and benches, a shelter, a picnic house, a playground and toilets. Two details are worth distinguishing when planning: the routes start at the beach, while the listed facilities offer different ways to spend time there. You can decide whether you mainly want to walk here or spend time at the beach. If a particular facility is important to your plans, check that it is currently available before your visit.
Viking Age boathouses
On the western shore of Harre Vig are two distinctive embankments, the well-preserved remains of Viking boathouses. Iron nails from ships found at the boathouses bear witness to repairs and ship maintenance. The boathouses are dated to the late Viking Age or possibly the earliest Middle Ages.
Harre Church and Vor Frue Church
Harre Church is a Romanesque ashlar church with a chancel and nave. Ashlar stones are worked blocks of stone; the chancel and nave are different parts of a church building. The Harre Bjerg route passes the remains of the small Romanesque chapel of Vor Frue Church. In the Middle Ages, Vor Frue Church served as a wayside church, providing for travellers on their way to Sallingsund. The two examples have different points of emphasis: Harre Church is described in terms of its construction and architectural elements, while Vor Frue Church is described in terms of its historic role for travellers. According to legend, Harre Church was once lost in a card game between Mogens Rosenkrands of Spøttrup and the merchant Niels Rybjerg.
Note about the Harre Bjerg route
The coastal section of the Harre Bjerg route can be difficult to pass when the fjord’s water level is high. Take the water level into account when planning this section.
Harre Vig – Rævehøjvej shelter site
The Harre Vig – Rævehøjvej shelter site has a shelter, parking, a fire pit, and tables and benches. The facilities differ in practical terms: the shelter site has parking and a fire pit, while the beach has a picnic house, a playground and toilets.
Pay & Play at Harre Vig Golf Club
The pay-and-play course at Harre Vig Golf Club is open daily to everyone. You do not need to be a member of a golf club or have your own golf equipment to play the course.
