Grynderup and nature at Grynderup Sø
Accommodation in Grynderup
For travelers choosing Grynderup as a destination and wanting to include nature in their stay, nearby Grynderup Sø is a destination in its own right. The restored lake lies in northwestern Salling and covers 140 hectares. It is very shallow and surrounded by meadows and reeds. As a protected natural area, Grynderup Sø includes the lake itself, the surrounding wet meadows and marshland; the area provides a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. The surroundings therefore combine open water with wet meadows and marshes.
Landscape and history
The landscape has gone through several historical phases. In the mid-19th century, Grynderup Sø was drained and subsequently used for agriculture. Restoration work took place in 2011; the lake was inaugurated in August 2012. The project was one of Denmark’s largest lake restoration projects. The sequence of events helps distinguish the former agricultural use from the restored lake landscape. For travelers interested in the history of the landscape, this transformation provides a specific timeline for the lake and the wetlands around Grynderup.
Birdwatching
Birdwatching is also one of the possible activities around the lake. At the southern end are meadows and mudflats where numerous waders can be found during migration. Sightings may vary by season. The Twin Tower double bird tower at the southern end offers a view of the shallow-water areas in the southern part of the lake; from there, you can look out over the lake’s southern end. There is also a low birdwatching shelter on Grynderupvej, overlooking the northernmost part of Grynderup Sø. The viewing points thus cover different areas: the Twin Tower overlooks the southern shallow-water zones, while the shelter looks out over the northern part of the lake.
